Lincoln Tells A Joke: How Laughter Saved The President (and The Country)
Read Free Books and Download eBooks

Poor Abraham Lincoln! His life was hardly fun at all. A country torn in two by war, citizens who didn’t like him as president, a homely appearance—what could there possibly be to laugh about? And yet he did laugh. Lincoln wasn’t just one of our greatest presidents. He was a comic storyteller and a person who could lighten a grim situation with a clever quip.      This unusual biography of Lincoln highlights his life and presidency, focusing on what made his sense of humor so distinctive—and so necessary to surviving his tough life and times.

I love biographies written for children! I think there is so much kids can learn from hearing about another person's struggles and how they managed to overcome in the face of adversity. I use biographies in my practice as a mental health clinician to help children practice empathizing with others and to learn positive coping strategies. I read this book today to a group of elementary school clients. They loved it. They enjoyed the illustrations, talked about Lincoln's struggles, and how humor was used as a means of coping. It launched a great discussion about ways in which they have used laughter in their own lives. Great book!

My six year old daughter and I really appreciated this book - but not as much as she will when she gets all of the humor in a few years. It's incredibly well researched, written and illustrated. For parents of younger children, please note that the topic of slavery is addressed as it should be. Be ready for the inquisitive, "what's that?"

Teach your children at a young age that humor is so important in life. Telling jokes got Abe through his many hardships in life such as the death of his sons, the Civil War, his difficult wife Mary, etc. What better role model is there than our beloved 16th President? Abraham Lincoln was extremely witty and an absolutely marvelous storyteller. Parents-buy this book so your kids will see the lighter side of life!

This book will endear Lincoln to the littlest Americans, who, of all people, seem to appreciate the effort to entertain them with jokes most of all. I love this book. I am so grateful to Ms. Krull, Mr. Brewer, and illustrator Mr. Innerst for making this an appealing, loving, lively look at our sixteenth President.

Many/most people have a rather somber image of Abraham Lincoln... What a delightful surprise it was, then, to learn that he loved jokes and laughing - had an enormous sense of humor.Kathleen Krull and Paul Brewer do a wonderful job of walking the reader through Lincoln's life (and its many hardships), while highlighting a little-known, but very important, side of his character. This book is beautifully written, funny, original and inspiring.I love Stacy Innerst's artowrk. Her illustrations perfectly capture the time period, Lincoln's struggles, and the humor that was essential to his success.I'm bummed this book hasn't gotten more attention. I know I will be promoting and sharing it as much as I can with the children and parents at my library, however!

Excellent story-telling. A fabulously funny and personal glimpse into one of our greatest presidents that makes his approachable and fascinating. Excellent and timely service.
