Re-create the glories of Celtic art with this collection of intricate knotwork. First used hundreds of years ago, Celtic knots were great for filling in borders and empty spaces in illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, and jewelry. (They rarely appeared by themselves.) Stunning in their simplicity, the knotted patterns are made up of single paths that never end except within themselves. This collection invites colourists of all ages to enhance sixteen traditional knotwork designs with colours of their choice. Some serpentine motifs incorporate animal forms; all display the distinctive spirals and weaves of Celtic design. When coloured with crayons, paints, or other media and placed near a source of bright light, these intriguing images will glow with all the luster of stained glass art.

I got this book for Christmas and absolutely LOVE it! The paper makes coloring smooth. The pages are perforated for easy removal if you want to put in windows. The outlines are dark and thick, so it is easy to stay in the lines. They are like puzzles - following the ropes to see where they go. Very fast and easy to complete each one.

When I first opened the book, I was disappointed because I could see the design on the next page through each page--you can't appreciate each image like that! But...duh...each page is printed on the heavy, translucent paper from both sides. So all you have to do is hold up each page and see the luscious design standing on its own. If you color on both sides with the same colors--like actual stained glass windows, you will get the same effect when you hold the finished page up to the light. And it's great that the pages are perforated for easy removal. Find a way to frame your finished piece or at least tape it against a window so you get that nice effect. And, yes, these images are really pretty. I so appreciate the customer who put up the 9 images because she did a great job adding dimension by coloring the outside of each line a little darker than the middle...so they look more 3-D than 2-D. That's the only fault of the book: the only ideas for color are on the front cover and in a partial image on the back.I won't be coloring these...not because I'm "too old" but because I want to transfer the patterns onto linen and stitch them. I love embroidery, especially that of other countries and particularly the first image would be very amenable to such transfer. If (when?!) I get around to it...oh so many projects awaiting...I'll upload a photo into the images on the right. You won't be sorry with this book. Highly recommended.

I purchased this to use as art therapy in dealing with my chronic pain condition. It serves as a distraction when I'm flaring and the stained glass paper makes these wonderful for display purposes

This book is very nice. I think markers work best with this one and the results do look like stained glass. Although I usually like to use colored pencils but they don't give the best effect with this book. However it is fun to do and I've enjoyed this Celtic Knotwork coloring book.

and have no time to sit and do it take this book with you to church, lectures, concerts, workshops and anywhere you sit and listen. The designs are simple enough not to take up much mental effort and can be pretty enough for satisfaction.

If this review sounds familiar, it is because I also bought Arabic patterns, too! Both books have beautiful patterns.Dover coloring books are consistently good. This book is appropriate for anyone who can (or want to try for this low price) to color within black lines which are approximately 1/8" thick. What I mean is, while the patterns are busy, a child can well master coloring these designs. Pages are perforated to remove them when working or when finished, thus keeping the book neat. I enjoyed one of these stained glass coloring books as a child, and I bought a few recently to share with visiting grandkids. Or with girlfriends whilst drinking wine. And we did, and we do!

It doesn't matter which STAINED GLASS COLORING BOOKS you purchase from DOVER PUBLICATIONS...They are worth every penny....Beautifully rendered on delicate see through paper, each drawing allows you to use whatever medium you desire...whether it is colored pencils, markers, etc....You can even color on both sides of the drawing to give the picture a more textured look!! LOVE EVERY ONE I HAVE GOTTEN SO FAR & SO WILL YOU!! Preferred mediums used are: CRAYOLA, MARCO RAFFINE, & PRISMACOLOR Colored Pencils, STABILO, STAEDTLER, & SHARPIE Colored Markers, Gel ink pens (Glitter, Metallic, and Neon)..If you are a bit heavy handed like me, use the markers gently....They will render the true pigment if you go over the area twice....Also, allow the gel pens to dry before closing the book. If you are left handed like me, you need to be careful where you lay your hand. The markers and gel pens WILL rub off onto your hand and onto the drawing...You can easily color over it, this is just a small forewarning....

Wonderfully engaging pictures of Celtic knot designs. Interesting to see where the knots go: what is connected to what: or is it all one connection? Delightfully bright and fun to look at with light shining through, especially when colored on both sides. I used markers for the brightness, but other mediums should work as well.
