This is a wonderful book! It's a surprisingly inventive and original take on colors. Children will want to read it over and over and adults will enjoy the compelling text and innovative design. The illustrations do a terrific job supporting this unique approach to looking at and thinking about color.

I shared this book with my class after visiting a gallery in Louisiana. They LOVED it. The students wanted me to read it daily. The memorized the text and loved the new color words. The bright and interesting illustration are ideal for young learners. The artist also has a site that supports the use of his book in education. We downloade and watched a Blue Dog powerpoint slideshow that included a photo of the actual dog the paintings are modeled from.
I am an art teacher and my fifth graders were really taken with this book and the artist. I originally bought the book to show them examples of the painting Blue Dog by artist Georges Rodrigue because we were working on a painting based on it. It was a super bonus to find the book made not only a great reference for the artist, but is also an entertaining picture book with simple, predictable text loved by my five-year old grandson, as well as ten and eleven year olds.
I bought this for an end of the year project for my 1st grade art classes. They loved it! The pictures are great and the narration is unique. The kids all drew their own blue dogs and made up their own colors. I like the way it teaches color.
Why is Blue Dog Blue? is one of my favorite books. I know I have a lot but this book brings so much to the table that it is well wroth the read.This book is about a blue dog. Now I have seen in classrooms, children get reprimanded for going off colors. This book not only encourages kids to change the color of things, but they also tell the child why one might change the color through understanding feeling.For example after a fishing trip, blue dog might be painted salmon color.This book goes thorough various situations and tells the children it is okay to let your feelings take over.After reading this book, I would encourage children to draw their favorite animal and paint it a color they are feeling. This can lead to a great show and tell and group discussion that are all feeling based.If I have to sum it up, this book teaches colors, feelings, and abstract art. A great book for the creative minds.
I bought this book for my 2 and 3 year old nephews. They Loooooooove Blue Dog! This book was perfect for them. They now think all dogs should be blue lol. The pictures are very vivid and this book is very well done.
We love everything about Blue Dog. We have several of George Rodrique's pieces and so our granddaughters especially enjoyed Why is Blue Dog Blue. It is not only a good, simple story for children, it is also a wonderful part of our collection.
