I'm an adult who loves to color. I like the illistrations in this book very much. I use my colored pics to add to my scrapbooks and other crafts, that's why I wish this book did not print double-sided.
The pictures were back to back. I use markers to color with, and I have to choose which picture on one page (both sides) I want to color, because the prints are on both side. Beautiful designs, but extremely disappointing.
This book is filled with beautiful black and white designs which can be used in making arts and crafts and which can inspire other designs. I find that all the books I have bought from Dover have been high quality and, considering their value, inexpensive to own.
(Kat here)Very nicely done, my only qualm is that there aren't very many pictures. Not as noticeable with other Dover books, because the pages are generally very intricate.These designs are quite simple in comparison, but I was pretty sure of that before purchasing. I had hoped for a bit more variety, such as some traditional tattoo designs, no such luck. Still though, for what it is, not bad at all. I use these to re-draw and practice my water-coloring & inking skills between work, and my little boy (almost 5) loves to sit at the table and paint with me, too. These are perfect for him, as he likes the more grown-up stuff that mommy does.
This is a gorgeous coloring book with beautiful Japanese images that come to life vividly when you add color to them. It is understated and not complicated, dizzy or intricate like some of these other coloring books. The pictures are zen, peaceful and very easy to color. The designs elegant and really beautifully drawn. It's been such a pleasure coloring in this book and I would highly recommend this as a gift to a beginner at Adult Coloring. I think anyone would love this, especially your mother, father or grandparents. It's old school without feeling too old fashioned. I seriously love this book!
I usually print out the pages if they are double sided onto some snappy paper, textured, vellum, etc, so that the other side does not get ruined. Not making money off them or giving them away so doing that shouldn't be much issue and if so the darn publishers and artists should have figured this out by now. I will not buy two books to be able to use all the pages.
Dover has done it again, this time making another wonderful coloring book aimed at those of us with advanced coloring skills. If you have a scribbling toddler, this book will delight them too but the complex images are probably more suited to the eyes and steadier hands of someone over the age of 8 or so. If you are an adult or an older child and if you love to color beautiful, unique images with a good amount of small and large detail, this is a great book for you! I am a huge fan of Japanese art so I knew I would love this one.I loved every page of this book and the artwork is truly beautiful, although I do wish the pages were not printed back to back. I use crayon but some of the darker colors can show through on the other side, plus I really like the other dover books where pictures are on their own page and the opposite page has a small blurb about the historical facts of the image. This one has a small explanation but when it comes to Japanese stuff, if they filled the whole opposite page with facts I would not mind. I like the art in this book better but I thought the "Victorian Houses" book had a better layout for those who color heavy or use ink markers. This book still gets five stars, it's just a preference thing for me and others I am sure.Either way, this IS a great book and I enjoyed it. Too bad I am almost finished with it. They really need to do more theme-based books like this based on countries. Dover coloring books, as always are printed on great quality paper and it doesn't seem to yellow over time. I have some Dover books that are several years old and I can still color in them. Unfortunately, I liked this book SO much, I've colored almost every page of it.Something about these pictures had an "addicting" quality, I am sure you serious coloring freaks know what I mean...This is the type of book you can pick up in your spare time...anytime...and once you start one, it comes out so cool, you want to color another...and another! Hopefully, Dover will keep making more books like this. I would certainly buy their other Japanese ones and if they made a Part II of this one, I would be delighted! Out of all my coloring books, this one is probably the most stunning when completed. It's hard to pick a favorite Dover book but if I had to, this would make top three!
For the price this book is a great deal for beginners who want to give it a try before spending more money. The book contains black and white designs that are both intricate and less intricate ones that take less concentration and time. So far I have colored two pages of the lesser designs to get used to the colored pencils. Coloring for me is a great way to relieve stress and I can take it with me because it is not bulky or heavy. I'm looking forward to coloring more of the detailed patterns. Half the fun is deciding on what colors to use. Mistakes? No problem. It is not going into an art gallery! :)
