I am a teacher in Sydney Australia.I read this book to a composite grade one/two class last year and they absolutely loved it. The illustrations are wonderful. I would thoroughly recommend this book to any teacher in Grades K-6. I am planning to read it to my Kindergarten class later in the year. I also purchased Vincent van Gough by Brad Buck and Joan Holub [Smart About Art Series] and was extremely happy with this purchase also. So I am planning on buying the 'Henri Matisse' book in the same series as it will be a perfect complement to 'Matisse the King of Colour' [Anholt's Artists Books for Children's Series].It was a great lead up to the study of collage in our art lessons.
Ever since my preschooler discovered (with mom's help) the wonderful painters' series of books by Laurence Anholt, we've accumulated quite a collection! Anholt has done a great service through these books, making art accessible to young children in the most creative and vibrant manner. What is even more remarkable, is that these stories are actually based on real events in the artists' lives - Monet's encounter with a young girl in his garden, Van Gogh's friendship with a young boy despite the alienation he suffers, and this book is no different. In "Matisse The King of Color", the friendship between Matisse and a young girl named Monique is explored. Monique initially meets the painter whilst he's convalescing from an illness, but later Monique goes away to enter service as a Dominican nun. However, the pair's paths cross again and this time Matisse gives Monique a very special gift that has lasted till this day - the construction of a chapel with stained glass masterpieces painted by the great artist himself. This is an inspiring story that conveys the lasting bonds of friendship, that attests to the creative and healing power of art.
Fabulous book! My girls, 6 and 3, LOVE it. I think the story is very sweet, and I also like that my older one seems to be inspired to create something after we read it. Soon after we bought the book, we made tissue paper "stained glass windows," which ended up being beautiful as well as fun to make. We might check out the other Anholt books in this series.
I bought this book for my second-grade grandson because the writing is good and the illustrator also did a good job. Quite often I have refrained from buying a book because I didn't like the art work. This book, focusing on Matisse's nurse and the work he did for the chapel of her convent in southern France, is a fine way of introducing the child to a famous artist. My grandson enjoyed the story.
This book about Henri Matisse is a great summary of this artist which I plan to share with my 5th grade students to help them become inspired to create their own paper cutout collages. It is well written with beautiful pictures, both of which captivate the interest of my students. So glad I found it since most of the other books about Matisse are written for the adult reader. This truly fits my needs.
Can't say enough great things about this series on famous artists. Beautiful stories, accompanied by appropriate insertion of their works make it easily appreciated by a younger generation of art afficionados.
LIKE THE STORY, BLOWN AWAY BY THE ILLUSTRATIONS. THE IDEA ABOUT CREATING THIS SERIES IS A VALUABLE LESSON FOR ALL US.
If you want to share with your child and/or grandchild the beauty of literature and art this book is a must.
