As a French teacher, I like to teach culture with the language and you can't go wrong with art. I want my students to do more than learn about artists and art movements, though, so I want them to do some art projects imitating the masters. The problem is always that the non-artists in the group don't know where to start. Masterpieces is a very good way to give them the starting inspiration. It has outline pictures (coloring book style) of 60 major works. Almost all of the works are highly recognizable. Some of the most famous artists, such as Van Gogh and Cézanne have two featured works in the book. That's good because I let my students choose an artist or painting to imitate and the most popular artists get chosen first.What I really like, though, is the short blurb about each artist and painting. Students can read a little, look at the outline picture and learn a little about it before starting their project.The copyright prohibits photocopying the book, so I cut the pictures out, put them in sheet protectors and put them in a 3-ring binder so students can look at the pictures or "borrow" one as they start their own imitative work of art. The price isn't so prohibitive that you couldn't cut them out and distribute them to a class to color their own trying to imitate the painting without having to draw or paint the main shapes.If I have one minor critique of the book, it's that there is no rhyme or reason to the order of the works in the book. They aren't ordered alphabetically, either by artist or by title. They aren't in order of their creation and they aren't grouped by art school or movement, so that's a little odd, but there is an index, so this is a minor problem.This isn't for people who already consider themselves an artist.
