I read this with my third graders on my iPad projecting it with a document camera.. I left the print small so they had to study the pictures and think about what the problem was on each page by looking at what happened on the left side and what would happen if everyone did it on the right side. Then I'd enlarge the print and have someone read the page. It was a great story structure and the students are working hard to create a shortened version of their own. They have had a great time with this book!
I recently used this book for more than one social skills lesson with elementary students. The book has an inappropriate situation described on the left page ending with the phrase, "What if everybody did that?" The right picture show why it would look like if everyone did it. It made for excellent discussions & inferences during the read aloud. Each student made a school-based, illustrated "what if everybody did that?" page for a class book. I loved it. The kids loved it.the regular education co-teacher loved it. Great resource!
This book is a great way to teach children the reason why we have so many rules (especially at school and in public places). It's not always because the behavior is dangerous or rude, it's because, "What if everybody did that?"Great way to teach a simple concept that is sometimes very difficult for impulsive children to master.
This has been on my wish list for a looooong time. Decided it was time to buy it because I've had some PBIS ideas floating around in my head for back to school. This story is going to be part of our kick off for learning the school standards. What if Everybody Did That? is all about community and remembering we all play a part in keeping our school, neighborhoods, and homes safe and happy places. If we don't think of others our surroundings and daily routines can quickly become chaotic. There are fourteen examples showing cause and effect example of behavior."During story time I had something important to say. I just couldn't wait till the end of the story. The librarian put her finger to her lips and said, "What if everybody did that?" Then it shows a picture of kids erupting in chaos and chatter. The last example is a positive one. I was happy they ended on a good note and what a great way to start off your lesson and discussion. "When I came home I gave my mom a hug. What if everybody did that?"If you need a new resource to introduce routines, procedures, and school standards this is such a great reinforcer!
We have "had" to read this book every night for nearly 2 weeks now! My son loves it, it's straight forward and the pictures offer up a chance for us to discuss the repercussions of the young mans poor choices/actions. We use the phrase "what if everybody did that!" all the time time when we see things out and about.
I find this book has married the art of writing for young readers (10 and younger) and how our actions impact our surroundings.Best of all my boys (3 and 6) really enjoy reading this book over and over.
Enlightening. Helps children see that a seemingly innocuous action when done by "everybody" can be detrimental to the greater good. On the other hand, there are some things when done by "everybody" can be beneficial to the greater good.
Used this book in family counseling session to teach children responsibility over their actions and foster communication on what the world would be like if everyone did what the wanted when ever they wanted without obeying rules or laws. Great way to begin important discussions with children.
