My son has been using a very structured Phonics program that is systematically going through each letter and vowel sound by groups. He has reached the point of reading sentences and I wanted to try and encourage his effort. After looking at many different little Phonics books, I decided to give these a try. Being a former teacher, I knew that there would be words he wouldn't know and that I would need to sit with him as he read. From reading several comments about these books not being for early readers, I have to wonder what they expected. Considering these are Berenstain Bears books with solid values and easy wording with each book focusing on one early Phonics concept (example Short "A"), I think these books are great for early readers! No, the kids are not going to be able to read EVERY word but, that's why parents should be sitting with their kiddos to read with them at this stage. I like that the words that are used in the book are listed on the opening page so that the person reading with the child can go over the words ahead of time. I also like the fact that the illustrations represent what the kids are reading BUT, they don't necessarily give away the words they need to read. I think these books are a great way to encourage early readers in their journey into the world of books!
My Daughter is in first grade and is somewhat struggling with reading. The teachers categorize her as a frustrated level 8 on the DRA reading scale. We have been trying to read A LOT at home to improve her skills and make her more confident. These books are ones that she can read without much trouble. I like that it is not the same sentence on every page with just a different last word. These are miniature versions of the larger berenstein bears books. Each page is very different and they do tell a story, though the traditional moral that BB books have is hard to fit into a tiny reader. My daughter likes them and they are enough of a challenge to keep her interested but easy enough that she can read them in a few minutes, reinforce site words and bolster her confidence. I'm really happy with them!
Got the book with the hopes to see my 5 year old finally reading by herself. It worked!She didn't started with these though. I got the first 2 sets of BOB's books and they are so easy that she got super excited and would ask to read more.The Berenstain Bears are simple and fun, a great second step.
My daughter reads these and loves these. the books inside have simple stories that kids love and know about. From going to the farm, to bringing home a puppy. Life is so hard now a days it is great to have books that are simple they help learn and are right to the point.
I have always read the Berenstain bears to my kids. Now that my oldest is starting to learn to read she wanted to read the Berenstain Bears too. But those are a bit to hard right now. She was delighted to get this for Christmas and be able to read her own Berenstain Bear books.
Perfect set for new reader. I was looking for books that my kindergarten son could learn to read with and these were exactly what I was looking for. Short enough that he doesn't get overwhelmed and gets a sense of pride at being able to get through them. The stories are pretty basic but still hold his attention and have some classic Berenstain Bears humor in them (esp. the baseball one). I didn't want books that were the same sentence but just had different rhyming words at the end and these are great. There are some challenging words but they really have helped him learn how to read. He has made enormous progress in just a week!
I love these I can read book sets!! Reading level is as described. Easy enough for my new reader to build confidence but at the same time allows for some challenges to continue word growth. And how could you go wrong with the Berenstain bears?
This book series is perfect for us. Small enough for traveling, short enough that we can get through several at a time. It focuses on long and short vowel sounds, but we also go through the books and I can point out other phonics blends as my son learns them. These books are about the size of a postcard, and I throw them in their travel bag for the car because they don't take up a ton of room.
