The lack of explicit moralizing is one of the best things about this instructive and funny book; too often this series is bogged down in parental admonitions. Yet the lessons are there: Practice, learn the rules, cope with pressure, play your best--but don't expect perfection. The pacing is excellent, the parents' and the cubs' perspectives are well-balanced, and the text is often very humourous. This excerpt describes the bears' practice field:"There were no foul lines, just base paths worn by year after year of cubs running the bases. So there were a lot of arguments about foul balls. There was a rule against sliding into second base, because second base was a rock. And any ball that was hit into the duck pond in left field was a ground-rule double and an automatic time-out while they fished it out."The book has 29 pages, with illustrations on each page. The illustrations are adequate, showing a fair amount of action in a straight-forward style. Recommended!

This is a great book. My three year old loves baseball and this story is one of the consistent ones before bedtime. We have a Berenstain Bears collection and this book along with "Too much Junk Food" and "Got The Gimmies" keep showing up in mommy's story time chair.

My three-year-old grandson loves this book. As with all Berenstain Bears books, The Berenstain Bears Go out for the Team teaches a lesson. In this case, the bears learn that hard work pays off, they learn not to let fear of failing stop them from trying.

My 6yo son LOVES the Berenstain Bears. With no exaggeration, we read a Berenstain Bears book at least 5 out of 7 nights a week. This is a cute story and adds to the variety that is chosen from each night (thank goodness) :). The Berenstain Bears books always have a a little lesson that the Bear family learns about themselves. In this book, Brother and Sister are nervous about try-outs for a baseball team. They worry whether they'll make the cut, but also Brother's concerned that Sister may make the team and he won't. Mama even becomes an aggravated "bleacher" parent and is reminded "it's only a game".

I was a backyard slugger and can easily identify with this book. As a kid I threw my tennis ball against our garage wall, the back side of a 5 car garage, and dreamed that I could be any baseball player I ever wanted to be—catcher, pitcher, shortstop, left fielder, and it was fun. Kids of all ages will have fun reading this exciting story and will want to tell their friends, I give it five stars, and I'm Marvin P. Ferguson, author of Boys On The Gold Coast.

I purchased this book for a 3 year old nephew of my girlfriend. At one point the sister bear calls brother bear out for being "sexist", which I think is a very valuable lesson, however might be a little more difficult to teach to a young mind. Otherwise the book covers a lot of great lessons on patience and what goes into trying out for a team. They also go over some of the trickier rules of Baseball which is cool.

One of the things that distinguish the Berenstain Bears books from many other children's series is that the books almost always contain a moral lesson. Sometimes the lesson is big, sometimes it is small. However, those lessons are usually there.Except in THE BERENSTAIN BEARS GO OUT FOR THE TEAM, there is no moral platitude. It's just a story. Brother and Sister Bear love playing baseball and end up trying out for a regular league baseball team. That's about it. It's a nice little story and kids who are trying out for a team may enjoy reading it because it illustrates that being nervous is common to all. Other than that though, it's just a nice story.

This book basically made me feel that I never wanted to purchase another children's book online because you really dont know what you are getting. The words and pictures were way to complex for a 2.5 year old and it was NOT interesting. Its also a old school book where there are several pictures or scenes on way page. Way to complicated and uninteresting. I also think the Bernstein in general have a sexist stereotypical family structure that I dont buy into.
