I was very disappointed when I opened this book. The cover shows three and four letter words, all read left to right or up to down. I thought it would be a great book for my four year old who is learning to spell. However the book is quite a bit more complicated. The very first page has words like Alaska and Alphabet, and the words can appear up, down, forward, backward or diagonal. I think it is a very good book, just not a first word search book as advertised.
Not "First" words by any means. This is a very good book for an older child but being that the title was Fun "First" word search and the cover pictures 3 and 4 letter simple "first" words going only horizontally and vertically I assumed that it would be a good word search for a 6 year old, it is not at all. First the words go not only horizontally but horizontally and backwards at the same time and the words are bigger words like Alphabet and words that certainly aren't first words such as ASIA, Aloha, whoosh, quebec, hopscotch. While I think this would be a great book for an older child it certainly doesn't contain "first" words or is good for teaching a younger child reading and phonics. I would say 8 and up.
Thids item was received as described and in a timely manner. My grandson has enjoyed many hours of fun. I would recommend this book for any child between 5 - 7.
My almost 6-year-old twins have gotten curious about word searches since they see me do them every day so I decided to get them these beginner books. They are still learning to read, so some of the words are just letters to them unless they take the time to sound it out. The puzzles are a bit challenging for them and I think some of the words are a bit long for a beginner book (some 6 and 7-letter words). Also the words in the word lists are printed in small letters but the letters in the puzzles are capital letters. I think that makes it a bit more difficult for children who haven't gotten the capital/small letters down yet. My daughter asks me for help on every word and I have to keep reminding them that the words can directionally go up or down and straight or diagonal like Connect 4 (which they love to play). I think they'll eventually get the hang of it and stop asking me for help so much, but whether they'll enjoy the puzzles as much as I do remains to be seen :-)
I got this book for my 6 year old and he loves it! He is very much into word puzzles and these are great beginning words for just that! I highly recommend this one for young children starting to read!
My seven year old granddaughter just loves this book. She always tried to do the regular puzzles that we see around, but they proved difficult and she soon lost interest. These are perfect for her. She understands thewords and learns to spell them while searching for them. If your child shows an interest in this type of puzzle he/she will love this one.
The book is relatively easy, for a first-timer, and fun. My daughter is always eager to get back to her word search 'homework'. I highly recommend it.
I teacher kindergarten and bought this because my students enjoyed completing word searches. It has the right amount of words for a K or 1st grade child. The puzzles are themed.
