DK Biography sets a new standard in children's paperback books, relying on bold photographs, energetic storytelling, and detailed sidebars and definition boxes to build an educational and entertaining series. These books are perfect for either the classroom or the living room. Each title features a celebrated leader who has impacted our world in a big way, from important politicians to inspiring civil rights leaders, great entertainers to groundbreaking artists. These men and women come from a diverse range of nationalities and generations, but all have played a crucial role in shaping our society. DK Biographies gain momentum from detail, delving into the small things — childhood hobbies, little known fears, hidden strengths — that make a person great. Most importantly, they encourage young readers to be curious about the world and those who have influenced it. Nelson Mandela was the first black president of South Africa, and spent 27 years in prison in his fight against apartheid. His life is a shocking, stunning, and heroic story of the struggle for freedom in a divided society, and an inspiring example of one individual's power to bring peace to a nation. Supports the Common Core State Standards.

Great book. I like the way the vocabulary is introduced and explained in boxes on the pages. It makes it easier for the kids. My daughter appreciates that very much.

I read this aloud with my two sons ages 8 and 9 over the course of two weeks. We thought it would be a nice addition to our homeschool in learning about South Africa. The material was a little inaccessible. I think one would need to know more about many of the players in South African political history to find this book engaging; however, I think if you had that background this book might be too simple. I'm not sure who would be the best audience for this book, but it did provide us with useful information. I wouldn't picture using this book again or recommending it to others as a "must read" - maybe just a lukewarm "it's okay" - but who wants that as a recommendation?

This biography of Nelson Mandela was my 13-year old daughter's introduction to the world of Apartheid. She found the book, and its depiction of Mandela's sacrifices and extraordinary acheivements, inspirational.

Had no idea of really who he was, gave me a brief overview but got me interested in who he is and made me want to read more about him

This book was absolutely what I needed for a very small school in Kenya....who have no English written books in theirschool.........this was perfect for the oldest class......great book

Very informative book. Such a complex man. Good to see his story told for this younger generation. We must never forget his fight for freedom.

Great book for a child who wants to learn more about this extraordinary man and all that he has done and very useful for school projects as well.

Since his passing I wanted to have as much as I could to pass on to my "grandchildren" even though I don't have any yet!!!
