âAn Invisible Thread Christmas Storyâ is the picture book version of Laura Schroffâs bestselling memoir, âAn Invisible Thread: The True Story of an 11-Year Old Panhandler, a Busy Sales Executive, and an Unlikely Meeting with Destiny.â As the title alludes to, this is the true story of an unlikely friendship between Laura, a young professional woman, and Maurice, a hungry little boy, that began one day on a busy New York street. In this version, narrated from Mauriceâs point-of-view, he not only tells the story of his first Christmas with Laura but he also shares with readers his true feelings about their friendship when he was a young child. Kindness and generosity are appropriate holiday themes and reading about the joy Maurice felt sharing Christmas with Lauraâs family shows readers how the invisible thread of kindness can change peopleâs lives, without being heavy-handed or preachy. Rootâs city life and Christmas scenes in rich, colorful pencil and watercolor are reminiscent of classic Christmas stories. âAn Invisible Thread Christmas Storyâ is the perfect story to invite a heart-warming feeling into your holiday season.
A beautiful and heartwarming book. I purchased it to add to our Christmas book collection this year. It was a little too deep for my four year old to completely grasp, but I look forward to rereading it with her in the future.
Well, since this is a true story and there is an end note from Maurice Mazyck that tells how Laura Schroff changed his life, I give this more stars than I'd have given otherwise. I hadn't read the original Invisible Thread and I hadn't heard of Laura Schroff or Maurice Mazyck before. So, speaking only about the book itself - I was taken aback by the picture of Maurice laying on his little mattress in the shabby room at the shelter after having spent a glorious present and food filled Christmas with Laura's family. I also wondered about Maurice's family. He says he had two sisters, a mother and a grandma. I felt sorry for them as Maurice got to spend Christmas with Laura's family. True, he said that his family didn't celebrate Christmas. But, I'm sure they would have loved a nice warm dinner and some presents. What did they do while Maurice was with Laura's family?
I also felt moved to buy many copies of this book and put in 6 of our local libraries for Christmas. I can seeI feel that this message is so important to get out there. It is the simple idea of making a difference on any level. Big or small. But make one!
Arrived in a timely fashion. Book is nicely illustrated and the story is presented in a warm, tender fashion. I read this book aloud to my son's third grade class and they loved it, as did his teacher. It is bound to be a new family favorite.
An awesome book for children. So many wonderful lessons about giving and sharing.
Used this story in my Sunday School classrooms (K- gr 5) this year at Christmas time. Provides great teachable moments. This story won't disappoint, only downfall is getting choked up every time I read it aloud!
Loved the Christmas Story as much as I loved the full story in the first book "An Invisible Thread".
