"Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change: Courageous Actions Around the World" is an inspirational compendium that profiles thirty different real kids from around the world who used their skills and abilities to make a real difference, improving the world. Divided into five chapters, "Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change" presents stories of kids saving the environment, kids standing up for themselves, kids helping others, kids overcoming challenges, and kids using talents and creativity. Examples include a painter of monkeys from China, a girl from India who climbs mountains, a boy in the USA who protects the habitat of endangered turtles, an orphan boy from Romania who champions the cause of other children who are orphaned and alone, an art prodigy from Japan who uses drawings to help heal the world, and more. "Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change" is the perfect example of the saying, "A brave heart is a powerful weapon (Rudy Garcia-Tolson, p. 123)." "Real Kids, Real Stories, Real Change" is written at reading level grade 5, and will have appeal for students ages 9-13.
My son has LOVED this book and tells me about the stories he reads in it. The stories are amazing and some heart breaking. I dont know how one cannot want to be a better person after reading the stories of heroism and courage from these young people!
This book profiles 30 young people from around the world. Unfortunately, the book includes no actual pictures or photos of the kids that are profiled. Despite this drawback, it is an inspiring and enlightening book. I have included this title in my online Gender Equality Bookstore.
Garth Sundem's book is a truly inspiring collection of stories about amazing children and teens from around the world who have accomplished incredible things. Middle schoolers and older can read it themselves, but for younger children I'd suggest reading each story yourself first to make sure it is right for your child. While all of the stories are amazing, some are heartbreaking. The resources listed st the end of each chapter are a great addition to the book and will help your child find ways to help.
I read these stories for my students and they absolutely love them. They ask me to read another one on a daily basis and when I begin reading, the class is quiet and they are completely interested. It teaches the children about what real courage and resilience looks like and that no matter how small you are, anyone can make a difference in this world. I recommend it to any and everyone !.
I originally bought this book for my 9 year old daughter, who has to read material other than fiction for school. I ended up taking it with me to several substitute teaching jobs in case I needed something to do with the kids. So far, everyone has really enjoyed it. Children like hearing about what kids their own age have done to make the world and their part of the globe, better. I have a hard time pronouncing some of the names of the kids featured, but other than that, the are stories are easy to read, short enough to keep curious minds focused, and most of them are very interesting.
Excellent book to take children beyond their own "normal" and learn about other kids who didn't just have a good idea, but acted upon it to make an impact larger than they ever imagined. We include this riveting book in every gift for my children's classmates (ages 8-10). I need to buy this in bulk! Thank you, Mr. Sundem, for writing a substantial children's book that doesn't insult their intelligence with superficial nonsense, but wakes children up to the infinite potential each one has!
The boys in the book club were very inspired after reading this book. They expressed thoughts of creativity and have been asking for help in planning for their future.
