I always assume that when famous athletes are deemed “role models”, it relates to their behavior as adults. In reality, they probably should be given more credit for the obstacles they faced and overcame as youngsters. KID ATHLETES does just that. Presented in an entertaining and relatable manner that is sure to appeal, the book shows how the world’s greatest athletes faced the same difficulties all kids deal with growing up.KID ATHLETES provides a well-rounded list of individuals that most kids will likely recognize (save a few). While some will inevitably question the omission of some sport stars (like Mia Hamm or Tim Tebow, for example), I felt the athletes selected for the book were suitable enough as they covered a wide variety of sports that are sure to widen the scope of a child’s view of athletics (baseball, basketball and football, as well as soccer, tennis, boxing and even sumo wrestling). Each entry describes the childhood of a specific athlete and addresses a particular hurdle that was cleared on their paths to greatness. The stories are well presented, fun and never too serious. The writing is easy to follow and understand. The artwork (with caricatures of the athletes as children) adds a degree of humor and “cuteness” that kids should appreciate. I was initially caught off-guard as many of the art injections serve as part of the story being told and not simple eye candy.
