Sojourner Truth's Step-Stomp Stride

Born into slavery, Belle had to endure the cruelty of several masters before she escaped to freedom. But she knew she wouldn't really be free unless she was helping to end injustice. That's when she changed her name to Sojourner and began traveling across the country, demanding equal rights for black people and for women. Many people weren't ready for her message, but Sojourner was brave, and her truth was powerful. And slowly, but surely as Sojourner's step-stomp stride, America began to change.

As the mother of two biracial girls, I have been overjoyed by the spate of kids' books on civil rights and black history. Kids from preschoolers on up through high schoolers now have the advantage of being able to access a history that is so much richer (not to mention accurate) than the white-washed version I grew up with in which the "War Between the States" was fought over "States' Rights". Kids can now learn about African-American leaders and heroes from well-known figures such as Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King to lesser-known but equally important men such as Francisco Menendez and Bass Reeves. This book is an excellent addition not only to African-American children's literature, but to Feminist children's literature as well. Sojourner Truth was not only a leading abolitionist crusader, but a tireless advocate for women's equal rights. Although she was a "mere" woman, Sojourner was the equal of any man. Standing over six feet tall, Sojourner was a force to be reckoned with. She was forged in the fires of slavery and sharpened by her pursuit of freedom for all.The bold colloquial style of this book mirrors the boldness of a woman who stood up to the world and took what was rightfully hers. Even as a baby, Sojourner (then known by her slave name of Isabelle or Belle) was a lusty child who would not be silenced. She grew precociously and was able to handle heavy workloads at a young age. Unfortunately, this strentgth was also a drawback for it led to her getting sold away from her family at the tender age of nine. Sojourner thought she could use her strength to earn her freedom, but she was betrayed. Nevertheless, Sojourner took matters into her own hands and took her freedom anyway, running away to New York City.
