Shirer is a very good writer and keeps things moving and interesting, giving enough facts and information to understand who is who and what is going on (and where, which many books do not make clear). That said, it is a 'light' read. It took me only 3 or so hours to read it and I felt at the end that it had only touched the surface of the whole story. I would have liked more info on the major players, especially at British and German HQs. This book could have been expanded by half and it would have only made it better. I still highly recommend it.
The author of this book takes you thru all the details of the short-living Bismarck, the Hood and others.Before reading this book, I've never read any wargames books, nothing related to naval battles... but it's amazing how, literally, the complete british navy was behind the Bismarck and with determination to sink it under any circunstances...Great book, a must read!By the way, everything is based on historical data, it's not science fiction.
Bought this book for my 14-year-old son, and he loved it. He's always loved stories associated with the Titanic, and has acquired a tremendous amount of Titanic knowledge. Although it was a VERY easy read for him, the story of the Bismarck has now broadened his horizons a little, and he enjoyed it immensely.
I ordered this book for my son's summer reading report and he enjoyed it very much. He learned about the Bismarck's strategy of attack during World War II and finally its destruction by the British remaining battleships.We received it within two days. Thank you for the fast shipping.
Very interesting. It is hard to imagine such large machines doing battle many miles apart. Imagine if the ship escaped and its sister ship was launched..So many events, seen in retrospect, would have changed the war and the world.
For the right age group, this book is wonderful. It explains not only what happened on the maiden voyage of the Bismarck, but some of the "why" as well. Why it was so important to the British that the Bismarck not reach the open Atlantic, why this ship meant so much to the German naval, and why so much of happens in war is the results of mistakes: time after time, the high command of both the British and German navies made mistakes, and med died for those mistakes.If you want to teach the subject of not only WWII but the concept of war, this book is a great starting point.I found the level of detail in the story perfect the age group it was meant for; they could absorb and reflect on the hunt and the final battle without being overwhelmed.
My son read this the summer between his 4th and 5th grade year and was completely absorbed (he also read the D-Day book, also by Sterling). I also read it and was impressed by the detail - the map of the Bismarck's journey was very helpful in providing perspective.The best part about the book was that it laid out a complex battle in understandable ways, but also captured the tension of ships trying to find each other in stormy weather and dense fog. When the ship finally sunk, the author doesn't spare the reader the magnitude of the loss of life -- a realistic portrayal of the costs of war. I highly recommend this book, and encourage parents to read along with the kids - you won't be disappointed.
OK, this book was not the detailed review of the history of the BISMARCK that I thought it might be. I should have checked the book before ordering. It was a "Sterling Point Book", which, when I started reading, I could describe with words like: overview, adolescent, short sentences, etc. But, all in all, it gave a good, short summary of the ship. It also gave several reference books (all much more detailed, I'm sure) about the sinking of the BISMARCK. I know that I will read at least one of these books in the future.
