The author/illustrator conveys his interest in the subect well, and the drawings are absorbing and well-executed. My 5 yo son studies the pictures and I read parts of the text - it's a little more text heavy than a true children's book would be - but that means we read it often, because I read different parts of the text to him. It is a good book for discussing/explaining life before cars, applicances ... central heating, baths, toilet paper, cutlery, elected government ...

I love this book. When going through old family boxes in storage, I found my old hardback copy from childhood literally falling apart. I was simultaneously upset and overjoyed, and immediately went on to see if it was still available. It was, and I bought it immediately. My only disappointment is that it is softcover. The text is good, but the pictures are wonderful. This was the stuff of dreams for me as a boy growing up and just starting to learn history. I recommend it highly for any parent who wants to introduce his children to these fascinating warriors of yesteryear.

A great book with some of the best illustrations ever! Interesting and absorbing for adults as well. The book is a bit advanced for younger children but the pictures will capture and hold their attention as it is read to them; serving to stimulate the development of their own reading skills. The stirring battle scenes and the accurate pictorial and written descriptions of medieval weaponry are first rate. This is not an antiseptic "knights and fair ladies" story book. It's actually quite raw and realistic in it's portrayal of both medieval warfare and everyday life during this period.Although focusing on warfare (though not exclusively) and primarily written for boys, many girls (and women) will also enjoy the book, since it's historically accurate and depicts medieval women and the fashions of the time to a limited extent. The color illustrations and black and white drawings (all illustrations are by the author) provide vivid images for young and old imaginations. The book is comprehensive as well, covering the period from the "Dark Ages" up until the early Renaissance. I remember taking this book out of the library numerous times as a kid until I bought a copy with my snow shoveling money. A true masterpiece.

I just wish I had this book back when I was teaching history. Some great Illustrations are between the covers of this book.

Great book. Met all my expectations. Same book my father bought me c 1958.

Beautiful pictures! Very detailed. It is best to use color pencils to color these pages. The paper is a nice heavy weight.
