This is an illustrated and condensed summary of World War 1. For a complete summary, you can go here. This book is perfect for children or history-illiterate people like me. It was simple and easy to understand, plus the illustrations made it more interesting (I think all history is incredibly boring). Now this is written by a British author, so it’s definitely a different perspective on the war than what I am used to. Obviously, in the United States schools, we learn primarily about what our role was in the war. Like I mentioned before, I am not great with history, so I can’t verify the accuracy of the facts in the book. My only complaint is with the text. It was hard to read some of it over the images. To read the rest of my review, go here: http://judgingmorethanjustthecover.blogspot.com/2015/10/a-simple-guide-to-world-war-1-daniel.html
I really enjoyed this book. As an adult who reads mainly history, I wanted a simple overview of WW I that I could share with my children & use as an introduction to the subject myself. I loved this book with its charming illustrations! The only caveat I have is that I couldn't get a single page view on my Kindle which made the print rather small in some cases.
Really high-quality book that has great visual presentation. This isn't your basic e-book and I would get it just for its graphics and pictures. The text is written simply but gets the point across well, just like is needed. It would be great for kids but honestly I think adults would benefit just as much from it.
I was very impressed with this book information wise and visually. The illustrations and easy to understand descriptions helped the book be truly simple. I would especially recommend the book for middle school students,Great book!
I didn't "look inside" before I purchased this book, but when I did I was so impressed. I expected only a written summary of WWI, but what I found was an animated pictorial journey laced with fun facts and information which helped me to understand the circumstance of the war. Included were plenty of info graphics about how the conflict started, who fought against who, and what each of their viewpoints were. Then there were the sections about the situation at the home front and the advances made during the war in weapons, tanks, and also air warfare. This book has made me a fan of Daniel Turner and his work. I bought the kindle version, but I think I'll be adding the print version to my collection too. I also was thinking they'd make for good gifts for my history buff friends!
This isn't a book I typically read, but it's Middle Grade and the pictures were so tempting I just couldn't resist. As an American, my knowledge of the war- WWI- is limited to a chapter in a book in high school starting with when the USA entered the war. I never really knew why the other countries were fighting or what was going on, I just knew why we entered the war. But this short book gives a brief history of the complete war, starting with alliances and going all through to the trenches and rats the size of cats to the bloodiest battles and the disgruntled winners. (If there really are winners in a war.) I learned a lot in this short book. It wasn't like reading- more like bullet points with information and pictures to illustrate.I really recommend this to reluctant readers, to kids as an introduction to history, and to brush up on your history. I enjoyed it so much I think I might check out some of the other ones. Thanks to the author for a review copy.
Way too expensive for the amount of content and pages here. Illustrations are nice and gives a basic rundown of the important events, but way too short. Read it in one sitting on the toilet. I would pay $3.99, but ten dollars?! Not again. I will not be buying the rest this series has to offer.
I am just obsessed with Daniel Turner's books! I've already read quite a few of them, and I have NEVER once been disappointed. His Simple History books are always so entertaining-- for kids and adults both! This is the way to understand all of your World Wars.
