The rain was steadily coming down as Evan ran from the schoolhouse to the doorway of his dry house. There were still hints of winter in the form of clumps of snow nestling in the gutter, but Evan hoped that with the rain it would be time for the Big Night. He sat at the table sipping his hot chocolate as his dog tried to snatch a cookie. He was distracted thinking about the weather. It had risen to forty-two degrees and he asked his mother, "Will they come out tonight?" She told him the temperature was right and perhaps it was time. At dinner time he repeated the question to his father who said, "Warmest rain since winter." It was time.Evan wasted no time preparing for the outing. He hurriedly put on his raincoat and his mother covered a flashlight in pink plastic. The spotted salamanders wouldn't be startled if the light was soft. The raindrops fell and Evan rushed to save them before they crossed the road. If he didn't pick them up and carry them to the other side they had a chance of being crushed by passing vehicles. "Hurry!" he said. "We have to save them." They began to cross the road one by one, as the family helped them. A couple of cars were urged to slow down. After an hour they had rescued thirty-six spotted salamanders. There were more to come, but if he wasn't there, what could he do to save them? Evan had an idea, but would it work? This is a marvelous story about the Big Night, the "first warm rainy night of spring" when spotted salamanders begin their journey. I loved the way the story wove the factual material (italicized on an adjoining page) into Evan's exciting yearly adventure to save as many spotted salamanders as he could.
