We have been having issues at homes with our kids not keeping their hands to themselves. You can only say "keep your hands to yourself" so many times before you start going crazy. So, I grabbed this book to help them process what I was trying to tell them. It worked beautifully. They loved the story. We reread it when they need a reminder. My kids are 7, 6, 4, and 2 (well, and 4 months, but clearly he doesn't have a problem keeping his hands to himself) and they all enjoyed the book and were able to understand the message.
My son started Transitional Kindergarten this school year. He was ahead of his peers in academic knowledge, but struggles with relating appropriately with his peers. This book helped him grasp the concept of social space and helped me accept how normal it is for some children to struggle with this area of development. I like that Harry is given a concrete way to know where his space ends and others begins. We know the book well, but pull it off the shelf to periodically remind my son. I think the story is cute and funny. The illustrations are very textured, like you could pull the characters off the page. I think this would be useful for visual and tactile learners. The background art is minimal, allowing the reader to focus on the action and dialog between the characters.
I read aloud to preschool (4-5yr olds) and after the teacher heard it, she said she just had to have it to read aloud to her class and so I gave it to her as a gift. Ms. Wells must have spent either years as a kindergarten teacher or many many hours observing these age groups. It is very funny, while making its points.
I have no issues with this book. It reads well and Little One will sit and listen to it. It's just not one of his favorites and we don't read it every week...and while some books have a specific phrase that helps with a behavioral issue, this book doesn't have a phrase like that which has stuck. We still use the phrase "personal space" when he can't stop getting all up in someone's grill...
Great book! kids read about a student named Harry. All day he makes bad choices in school that result in him being unsafe, irresponsable and disrespectful. Until the classright brainstorms a solution that helps him see the error in his ways. Through this he realize on his own he wants to change. It opens up a dialogue for what the right thing to do is and why. Students discover how making good choices makes you and people around you feel safe, respectful and responsable!
I got this to share in my class. It was easy for the kids to relate to the story. My class also easily picked up the moral. It led to a good discussion on what to do when your classmate bothers you.
