Bought this for a 9 year old little boy I know who loves snakes. He has LOVED reading the book and he doesn't like to read. Scrapes with snakes is wonderful at combing photos and snake data with exciting, griping stories about snakes that the author has found himself a part of. Personally I am not a fan of snakes but in reading the book with him I have learned quite a bit about snakes. The book is good at explaining words that may be over a child's head and provides how to pronounce difficult words for the kids. If you have a child who struggles with reading and is under the 4th grade, this book may be too much for them to read alone. However if they love snakes, they will be motivated to sound out words and work their way through the book.

The child I bought this for really liked it but put it down to do other things. The 5 star test is the book is keeping the attention of the child.
