I've just read The Yucky Reptile Alphabet Book by: Jerry Pallotta, illustrated by: Ralph Masiello. It has amazing reptiles that I have never knew even existed. Reptiles are my favorite type of animals. I am in 5th grade and I really don't read alphabet books, but this reptile and alphabet book is extraordinary. I like this book. Ralph Masiello is a great illustrator. He draws incredible reptiles in The Yucky Reptile Alphabet Book.
When I first purchased this book 20 years ago for my daughter, she was in kindergarten. She has since grown and passed the book down to her children. My Grandson read it so many times he wore the book out. It was paper back then, when I found the hard back book on I had to get it for him. I couldn't have been happier when the book arrived at my house. My Grandson was so happy she said "Look Mom Mom my book is back!"
I probably would have passed on this one based on the title (there's nothing "yucky" about reptiles, imo!), but we received it as a gift and I'm glad we did. The illustrations are stunning and the detail given about each reptile will lend interest to the book as my child gets older.I do have a couple of quibbles with the content. I can forgive the author for using a scientific name for 'X', since there are no reptiles with common names that start with that letter, but I'm a little disappointed in the author's treatment of 'K' and 'Z'. There are inexplicably two entries for 'K': Knob-Tailed Gecko and Komodo Dragon. Ostensibly this is for soft and hard K's, but then why not apply this logic elsewhere ('G' comes to mind). Additionally, 'Z' is a cop-out with "Z is for Zillions of years ago", as there are a handful of reptiles whose common names start with 'Z'. This reads like a not-so-subtle advertisement for Jerry Pallotta's Dinosaur Alphabet Book, which came out the year after this one.Overall I do recommend this book for anyone with littles that are interested in reptiles, but don't expect perfection.
I have bought many of Jerry Pallotta's books, some for my great-grandson and even more for my daughter who works with autistic children. I liked the reptiles that were chosen for this book, but I'm giving it only 2 stars because so many of the pictures had such dark backgrounds. This made it difficult to see most of the reptiles. Even the reptiles themselves should have been in brighter colors. Children would have trouble seeing what was in the pictures. This was disappointing.
My child thought they had lost this book at school. They couldn't find it. Barely even remembered checking it out.I bought it & then it turned up the next day at school in another classroom.I went ahead & donated it to the school. Thanks!!!
My son and I enjoyed looking at the illustrations of unique reptiles. He repeatedly asked me to read this book to him and actually remembered most of the information read to him! I would recommend this book to anyone.
This book was awesome! It wasn't really yucky, unless you're a total baby about lizards and such.It had a lot of animals we'd never heard of before and some of our old favorites. We learned such interesting, and yucky, things - like blood spurting out of the eye of a horned lizard to scare a predator away. Yeah, I'd run too. It has really great illustrations and a bit of humor mixed throughout. My boys looked through it a lot and we read it many times before sending it back to the library. And I think we'll be getting it again soon. They've been asking about it. Fast forward a year - we bought it!*taken from my review at goodreads
I read the book Yucky Reptile. I like the letter M becausee it stands for moloch. The Yucky Reptile book is good for children because it tells about the reptiles and their habitats. The book also tells what the animals do when they're mad or happy. I think that Ralph Masiello's illistrations are fantastic.
