This book is not worth the money. It is short, bright, and attractive, supposedly geared to kids. However, there are no basic instructions, mostly just cute ideas of things you could do if you already knew calligraphy, and those ideas are not particularly unique. Examples, at best, show complex letter forms that they haven't shown you how to do, at worse they do not match the text. For example, they recommend "using two pencils" to draw double line letters, but then picture an outline letter form that could not have been made with two pencils. Instead, look at The Complete Book of Callligraphy, Lyon and Sullivan, which does what this purports to do, but fully and well.
'Complete Book of Calligraphy' is a very colorful and easy to understand book. I would suggest this title for anyone, new or well versed in the art of calligraphy. This book shows the endless possibilites that lie right at the end of a pen. Calligraphy can be used in so many creative ways, more than I even imagined! I thought calligraphy was just pretty words, but this book shows me that it goes well beyond that. This would also be great for gift-giving!
This is not a complete instructional book on calligraphy, or even a beginner's guide. Instead, it gives an elementary student (7 - 10 year olds) basic ideas on how to create letters in various forms. Everything from fancy lettering, to embossing on cardboard, to popup letters like you would find in a birthday card. The projects all utilize common household items, even showing how to make your own pen using cardboard and a sponge (among a few other items). What you write or create is up to you.My daughter checked the book out from the school and I liked it enough to purchase it.
