Come Look With Me: Animals In Art

Few subjects have more immediate appeal to children than animals, and few methods of teaching students to appreciate fine art have proven more successful than those of educator Gladys S. Blizzard. In COME LOOK WITH ME: ANIMALS IN ART, she makes the most of children's natural curiosity about animals to introduce them not only to twelve magnificent works of art, but also to a whole new way of encountering art. Using an approach which is as fun as it is effective, the author deftly guides her young audience toward their own understanding of and delight in the world of art. The works featured in ANIMALS IN ART represent a variety of styles which students will encounter again in museums and in books: the muscular realism of Rosa Bonheur's "The Horse Fair", the delicate romanticism of Martin Johnson Heade's "Cattleya Orchid" and "Three Brazilian Hummingbirds," the bold abstraction of Henri Matisse's "The Snail." They also represent an intriguing menagerie of beasts, from the mysterious deer and horses stampeding across the wall of Lascaux cave to Paul Klee's whimsical heart-nosed cat dreaming of a bird.

From cave paintings to modern art, animals are depicted in many situations doing many different things. The questions asked with each picture add to the child's ability to "see" the art subject.

This book is one of an engaging series designed to introduce children to good art. Although they can be read to younger children, I think the kids would enjoy looking at each picture and recalling the details that were read to them. The author invites the reader to explore each art example with a short, lighthearted description, and additional brief questions to encourage a thoughtful response. The art pieces chosen span many styles and art movements. I was impressed with the overall concept and presentation of these books. A lot of thought went into the writing and design. Beautiful collection to give or add to a child's library.

I bought this book to go along with our copy of Come look with me: Enjoying Art with Children. Once again the artwork is excellent and the questions used to discuss each piece are very thought provoking. My children who are male 10 and female 8 love the pictures as well. I think I enjoy the art just as much as they do.

These "Come Look With Me" books are just awesome for getting my 4 yea old daughter to sit down and really look at a picture. It helps her to form and express her opinions in a very non-judgemental way and also introduces her to many mediums and styles of art. Very valuable in my opinion.

I love the idea of this book and was looking forward to it.However, its kinda dry and pictures are for older kids and the picture bio are way over my kg head and reaching for my 2nd grader...i make up my own questions...

I purchased this book to use in my preschool classroom. We talked about artwork our last week of school and this was a great way to get the children to see famous works of art. I also love all of the open ended questions that this book includes so you can as the children wonderful thought provoking questions!

These books are very educational. It teaches children how to view and appreciate the arts. We really like those books.

We use this book as part of our homeschool elective: art appreciation. I feel that it is a fun way to introduce art to my kids.
