23 Ways to be a Great Artist is a WONDERFUL book. I am surprised at how over-the-moon I am for this book — those over-the-moon feelings burst forth while reading the introduction. The introduction sets the tone for all the fun and creative times to come.“Every artist has a starting point: excitement about the way colors blend on canvas; the way clay feels in their hands. Those starting points lead to masterpieces. Following simple steps might seem like an easy task, but it’s not the key to becoming a great artist … you should try to be as creative as possible and make every artwork your own. You must learn, experiment, and put your thoughts, feelings, and personality into what you create.”YES! I love that statement so much. Creating art is so much more than just following steps, it’s all about being in the moment, savoring the creative process, and expressing yourself through the art. There are a variety of projects, from simple to complex, that use all sorts of art supplies. The projects vary in length from two to four pages — there is just one project that is one page. The graphic design is consistent throughout — the artist’s name, an artist fact file box, a brief artist bio, and a photo of his/her masterpiece will always be on the first page. Also on the first page is the name of the project, a list of supplies, and the beginning of the step-by-step instructions.I love the “Top Tip” and “Think about it” boxes. The “Top Tips” share advice and/or techniques so that your project will be successful. The “Think about it” boxes have prompts that encourage deeper thinking about the creative process and how to get more out of the projects. The book concludes with “The Never-Ending Project” — this is an ongoing journaling project.
