My 6 year old, who loves bugs, loves this book. The drawing instructions are are very simple for a child to follow, and he came up with some nice looking drawings. I uploaded some of his drawings. The book is made of strong, sturdy paper, good to last a while.
Today we didn't have to go anywhere: Today was a stay-home-and-draw day. My almost-five-year son had finished coloring his Hallowe'en pictures, so I thought he might like to draw some spiders and spiderwebs. I was right.The directions in the Bug Drawing Book are simple enough that my son could follow them (if I was right there talking him through them), and yet the illustrations are interesting and complex enough that I can see him using this book as reference for many years. I'm especially grateful that Mr. Masiello examined the spiders and insects up-close so that I did not have to.
My 8-year-old daughter really enjoys and has success with this book. The finished drawings look very nice, and never like over-simplified step-by-step drawings, yet they are fairly easy for her to follow and reproduce. The colors he uses are beautiful and nicely done, providing more good ideas for the reader. I strongly recommend this book.
Ralph Masiello's step by step pictures are Awesome!!!! I want to buy all of his books. My son can be s bit of a perfectionist and will was paper up and throw it away if he can't figure a drawing out (which is frustrating for both of us)...but this book helps him get the drawing down almost immediately. We love it!!!!!!
I purchased this for my 4 year old grand daughter and she was able to follow the directions and draw pictures of the bugs immediately. We have had hours of enjoyment with caterpillars, beetles, spiders and butterflys. She is learning science and doesn't know it!!!!! The directions and illustrations are large and easy to follow and the results are so individual it is hard to tell that they were "copied".
Bought this for my nephew. He's is 6. A few days later I got a FaceTime call from him showing me all the bugs he drew. They looked VERY good for a kid his age (even for someone my age ;). Very impressed.
I ordered this drawing book for my 6 yo son, who is very creative and enjoys art, but is more abstract with his drawings. When first presented with the book, he felt totally confident in following the steps to create insects, and was inspired to create a whole scene full of a variety of insects. The book is beautifully done, easy to follow and inspiring to the young artist. I highly recommend it!
