Danny loves dinosaurs! When he sees one at the museum and says, "It would be nice to play with a dinosaur," a voice answers, "And I think it would be nice to play with you." So begins Danny and the Dinosaur's wonderful adventures together. For Danny and his prehistoric playmate, even the most everyday activities become extraordinary, like finding a big-enough place to hide a dinosaur in a game of hide-and-seek. Kids will delight in Syd Hoff's charming, comical illustrations as they read about how Danny teaches a very old dinosaur some new tricks.Originally published over 50 years ago, this beloved classic is a Level 1 I Can Read that is perfect for the beginning reader learning to sound out words and sentences.Supports the Common Core Learning Standards

I first reviewed Syd Hoff's "Danny and the Dinosaur" as a seven year-old. In second grade, we called it a book report, but my feelings on the book haven't changed. Danny's adventure includes a visit to the ballpark, which still has me smiling. Also, like hiding an elephant, Danny discovers playing hide-and-seek with a dinosaur can be difficult. While the writing and drawings aren't on par with "Make for Ducklings," or "Mike Milligan and the Steam Shovel," it capably compares to H. A. Rey's "Curious George" series. "Clifford, the Big Red Dog" readers will connect with Danny playing with an oversized lizard. The text is simple, and the story is sweet, unencumbered by the intentional messaging found in many modern children's books. It is just a fun, silly story. It helped me learn to read and to love books. Maybe Danny's tale can help your son or daughter read too.I fully recommend "Danny and the Dinosaur" by Syd Hoff.Anthony Trendleditor, HungarianBookstore.com

A boy meets a dinosaur in a museum and the dinosaur follows him home for a visit. This fantasy appeals to a child's desire to befriend the creatures that fascinate them. It's a gentle story, with no sad or scary parts. The dinosaur and the boy do "cool" things together, but also treat one another, and others, kindly.

We're big fans of the "I Can Read!" paperbacks, and started to run out of new "My First" level books. I looked at the Level 1, Beginning Reading, books and happened upon these two oldie but goodie books from Syd Hoff."Danny and the Dinosaur" first came out in 1958, and was followed a year later by "Sammy the Seal". I was delighted to see them reissued as "I Can Read!" books. They are a particularly good deal because they are twice as long as the usual "I Can Read!" books, but are still available at the regular paperback price. In "Danny and the Dinosaur" a kid meets a live dinosaur at the museum and heads out into the City with him for a day of wild/mild adventure. In "Sammy the Seal" a friendly seal who's curious about life is allowed a day out of the zoo so he can wander around and explore. Both books feature kind and friendly kids, helpful adults, cheerful adventures and no drama. Is this a 50's sort of thing? Well, yes, the books do have a bit of a nostalgic rose-colored-glasses feel to them, but they aren't glaringly old-fashioned and they've actually aged awfully well. So, these are two books that you might recognize from your own childhood library, they aren't franchise or movie tie-ins, they are readable at the recommended new reader level, they are mellow and colorful, and they're upbeat and cheerful. That's not bad at all.

There are plenty of reviews of this book, I want to give my thoughts on the book and tape package available. There is a nice introduction and conclusion offered by the narrator and one side has page turn signals, while the other does not. While this is an unabridged recording, the narrator actually adds words on page 18, which may confuse the child trying to follow along in the book. Also, sometimes the narrator's child voices come across as whiney and nasal. However, all things considered, I feel this is a worthwhile purchase.

I absolutely loved this book as a child. One day it popped into my memory so I set out to try to find it for my little boy. None of the online bookstores had it (B&N, BAM), but did! I was only able to get it in paperback, but I am still on the hunt for it in hardback. It is a story about a boy named Danny who goes to the museum. He sees the dinosaurs and wishes they were alive to play with. And one is! They spend the day together doing many different things, and then the dinosaur goes back home to the museum that night. It is a simple story with very simple illustrations, but still fun. So glad I found this again!

When I was about eight years old, I had the pleasure of meeting Syd Hoff at my elementary school. He autographed my copy of "Danny and the Dinosaur" and I was so very happy! About fourteen years later, I still remember this book fondly. As I shop for a gift for an expecting friend, I feel confidant purchasing this book and knowing it will be loved by both mother and child.

I bought this book for my nephew Wyatt who is in second grade and he loves this book. He must have read this book millions of times over. I loved this book as a kid and I think that it has helped him take an interest in reading. The story is great, I love the illustrations and I think that the dinosaur is COOL and CUTE. A timeless classic. I love Danny and the Dinosaur GOES TO CAMP and the birthday book. I have read a lot of SYD HOFF books when I was a kid. THEY'RE GREAT.

Bought this for a former student who is expecting. This was my favorite book growing up (my dad said he had it memorized) and I read it to my boys a lot too. It is a great beginning reader for children. Highly recommend!
