Aaron Becker, creator of Journey, a Caldecott Honor book, presents the next chapter in his stunning wordless fantasy.A king emerges from a hidden door in a city park, startling two children sheltering from the rain. No sooner does he push a map and some strange objects into their hands than he is captured by hostile forces that whisk him back through the enchanted door. Just like that, the children are caught up in a quest to rescue the king and his kingdom from darkness, while illuminating the farthest reaches of their imagination. Colored markers in hand, they make their own way through the portal, under the sea, through a tropical paradise, over a perilous bridge, and high in the air with the help of a winged friend. Journey lovers will be thrilled to follow its characters on a new adventure threaded with familiar elements, while new fans will be swept into a visually captivating story that is even richer and more exhilarating than the first.

I give this book 4 stars for its story and 2 stars for its quality control. The story continues where Journey left off, with the girl and boy off on an adventure on the bicycle they made together using their red and purple crayons. They find a new portal to the fantasy world seen in Journey, but this time they have a quest to track down crayons of each rainbow color before the mean grey soldiers catch them. It's a very good story, told completely in pictures, and it will be interesting to see how the 3rd book wraps up the saga. Now for the criticism: What happened with the quality control on the illustrations? If you read Journey and then start to read Quest, the downgrade in image quality is jarring. Whereas every page of Journey is polished and perfected, with frameable quality artwork that has been fully detailed and finalized, more than half the illustrations throughout Quest appear sketchy and unfinished. The larger compositions are often very good, but you get the sense that the book was published before the artist had time to finish fine-tuning using the same production process that he did on Journey. Just opening the book, right away there is an immediate feeling of disappointment. There are even a few pages where it looks like the illustrations barely made it past the initial sketch stages. What happened here, editorially? Something went wrong somewhere. The author and publishers had a bona fide hit with Journey, so why not get the 2nd installment right as well? I honestly think the author should go back and re-work the illustrations until they're as polished as they are in Journey, and re-release an updated edition of the book, with discounts for people who bought this edition. That's how badly I feel this book misses the mark, quality wise.
