Our son is obsessed with trucks, which is why we bought him this book. And let me be very clear, he does indeed love this book. With that said, there is some serious false advertising going on here. 100 trucks huh? Why then are there cars, motorcycles, airplanes, and hot air balloons in this book? We are perplexed and would love an answer.
There are no more than 40 actual trucks in this book. Many of the pictures are of non-truck vehicles, such as buses, motorcycles, a bicycle, various cars, trains, several boats, airplanes, and even a space shuttle. It is just fine as a book of 100 vehicles, but it is not a book of 100 trucks.
This is a perfect little book for my 2 year old, we own several of the larger board books, but this one he can easily carry around with him and read it when he finds his perfect place to sit. I like that it is slightly padded and soft on the outside and the pages are sturdy cardboard, so it will have lasting power in our home. Easy to throw into a diaper bag or my purse when we are out & about as well.
This book is hardly ever out of the hands of my almost 2 year old grandson. To say that he LOVES it would be an understatement. This book is terrific, it had real pictures of all sorts of trucks and cars and farm vehicles and with the name of the vehicle printed underneath. It is a great learning tool. The board book is almost indestructible.
The final pages of this "truck" book will SHOCK YOU.I recommend you sit while reading this to your child, because your socks will come blasting off your feet when you discover that "100 Trucks" includes some loose definition of what a truck is to hit that promised number. You will find yourself doubting that you knew what a truck was, and once that bit of code is in your brain: it's all downhill from there. If you didn't know what a truck could be, what else don't you know? What a ball is? What can be cake? Everything falls apart.
This is a great book for children who love trucks, tractors and other moving items. Even though the book is called first 100 trucks not all of the pictures are of trucks. Some are of tractors, ships, planes, motorcyles, etc. Even though the title is a little misleading, this is a fun book that your child will want to read over and over. The pictures are good quality and there are lots of colors in the book to help with teaching your child colors.
This represents my emotions as I navigated the bowels of this `novel' with my 120 month old child:Pleased, Delighted, Awestruck, Uncertain, Perplexed, Incredulous, Exasperated, Appalled, Flabbergasted.Traumatized.Never before have I felt as much dismay as I did when I read this book, "First 100 Trucks" by Roger Priddy. Without giving too much of the plot away: The intro to the book starts off strong with beautiful and detailed pictures of trucks. Delivery trucks, Garbage trucks, Dump trucks all make a prompt introduction. But I soon became suspicious when I begin to notice non-truck vehicle creeping in: Excavators, vans and buses. Then suddenly, Mr. Priddy introduces what can only be described as distinctly non-truck vehicles: Bicycles, motorcycles and ATV's! Completely forgoing the entire narrative, he then injects Monorail trains, Yachts and military-grade fighter jets. He concludes the book completely off topic with a Hot Air Balloon! The author must be full of hot air himself if he considers it appropriate to discuss a commercial dirigible in a book about trucks.I have no idea where the author came up with these `examples,' but the members of my book club all agree that there is no way this manuscript was properly peer reviewed. The only thing more shocking than the content is the fact that there is absolutely NO source citation ANYWHERE in the 24 pages. How this book can then be classified as a learning tool points to a deeply flawed system, of which I won't even begin to delve into now.The long term effects of reading this to my child are not yet fully realized, but I shudder to think of the implications. Just the other day my son, smiling brightly in his misguided ignorance, pointed to a commercial jet liner flying in the air and shouted, `Look Daddy! It's another truck!"This book is down-right dangerous.
This is actually our second copy. The illustrations are really great. The trucks are grouped into categories. My son absolutely loves it, and actually recognizes some of the truck names by sight now, which the print is nice and big so he can. My only complaint is that we've had to replace the book twice already because the binding keeps coming unglued, which leads to the pages falling off. It is a board book, but definitely not indestructible.
