Curious George goes to a pancake breakfast (actually, it's more like a county fair). Then, he makes pancakes while the cook is away. He makes them quicker and better than the cook. Then the cook chases him away. As usual, George gets in a little bit of trouble. Then all is well, and everyone praises George. This book has part of the charm of CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO AN ICE CREAM SHOP, with almost exactly the same plot. There's nothing surprising here-- kids and adults will see Curious George in another formulaic plot. This book was adapted from the Curious George film series, and it is based on characters created by H.A. Rey. It is NOT one of the George books written by H.A. Rey.Some readers are delighted by Curious George, and the plot doesn't matter. In that case, choose CURIOUS GEORGE MAKES PANCAKES.If you want a better story, try CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO AN ICE CREAM SHOP, or, better still, one of the H.A. Rey-authored original Curious George stories, such as CURIOUS GEORGE GOES TO THE HOSPITAL or CURIOUS GEORGE GETS A MEDAL.
The Kindle version, announced today, is unusable on my iPad with Kindle app. All the text appears two or three times: once as text, once or twice as grainy, low-res images under the pictures. Text and pictures are not in a coordinated order. There's no way for a kid to sort this out and read it to himself. I ended up reading some parts twice while reading it out loud.
The story is a good one -- not an original H.A. Rey, but good for those of us with children obsessed by all things Curious George. Unfortunately, the Kindle version is simply a scan of the pages that show up sometimes two to a Kindle page. The text is far too small to read, so they have typed it in at the bottom. Not only does it look incredibly inelegant, sometimes the text does not accompany the picture it is intended to accompany. What a bummer for my kids and for me. For the money, the text should be at least on the same page as the corresponding illustration, even with the inelegant presentation.
Love curious George books. I would recommend this for older kids though, like 2 plus. My one year old isn't really entertained by the illustrations in these books. They're great but pretty minimal with very little colors etc. still great storylines though!
My oldest loves Curious George on television. So I was surprised that he really doesn't sit still for the original book by Margaret Rey, which is somewhat dated and sounds stilted to today's young read-to-me audience. But Curious George Makes Pancakes does make the grade with him, it is so similar in tone to one of George's cartoon adventures. He consistently requests it in the bedtime rotation. It has some good messages, too - George is constantly looking for ways to help out at the hospital's pancake fundraiser, though as always his best intentions seem to go awry. I think my kids really identify with this, how often have I been dismayed when I find them "helping" to wash dishes and getting suds all over the floor, or "helping" to flush the toilet paper as I watch the whole roll disappear down the toilet, or "helping" to feed the dog with the dinner I've just made? It's nearly always a disaster when they take it into their heads to help, but they get to see George turn the disasters into triumph as the grown-ups learn that monkey (and toddler) help really is very valuable.
We love the george books. This is one of the new ones and so the writing isn't as simple and elegant as the original HA Reys, but the content is good.(George goes to a fair, makes a bunch of awesome pancakes that everyone loves, then gets in trouble and gets messy and does funny things (dunk tank), then saves the day)
Our kids enjoyed it, and the pictures and story are cute and enjoyable, but there's still somethign disingenous about the fact that it's not actually done by Margret and H.A. Rey, but rather "in the style of." Granted, they get the style pretty well, all things considered, and the same, somewhat contrived formula of "George get's into trouble but makes everything right again" (this time with pancakes), but it just doesn't seem completely real to me, done in the style of other creators. Ah well, the kids like it.
Everytime I see a Curious George book I remember how much I loved reading them as a kid, I must confess that nothing has changed. This is a funny, entertaining book for both adults reading to children and for children themselves.
