The illustrations are humorous and engaging. The text is easy to follow but doesn't talk down to children. Kids with a combined interest in music and visual art -like Ellington himself- will love it. My dyslexic, artsy child was enthralled with the multi-sensory combination of sound descriptions, photos, and paintings.Jazz is a complex art form, but this book does a good job breaking it down in ways that kids even without a musical background can appreciate. It has a balanced approach to putting Duke's life in historical context of segregation without being a book "about" racism. This is a good book for use any time of the year, not just Black History Month. It can be used to teach the creative process, American inventions and innovators, history in Washington DC (birthplace) and New York (Harlem Renaissance), and obviously music appreciation.Have YouTube handy while you read it to play some of the iconic songs mentioned in the book as background. Or take a dance break while reading. So much fun!

The book is only 32 pages and with only 11 pages devoted to actual text, he did an excellent job in projecting DE musical career. A wonderful gift to a child in the 4-8 age bracket.

Colorful, easy to read and informative...I love the humor mixed with history. A good classroom resource. Great for children and teachers. Thank you.

This is really a lovely book with accessible language and great images.I would buy it again at this price point.

Very useful resource for my students during Black History Month!
