This book shows children the woodwind instruments, how they are played, describes their sounds, and gives each instrument a fun little persona.I especially like the page where the four reeded woodwinds are grouped together, and then --on the same page -- the two metal woodwinds are grouped together. A subtle little Venn diagram illustration.Nice book -- lots of information -- kids absorb it easily and remember it a long time.

I'm a music teacher, and I bought this book, along with 2 others in the series, to help me teach each instrument family to my students. The book has really great factual information in it! It gives each instrument a name (like Clara or Max) and a personality that matches its timbre/tone color (which is a really smart way of describing timbre to little ones!). It talks about the technical aspects of each instrument; relative size, materials, mechanisms, how it's played, all in a very accessible way. There's even an index, glossary, and reference website in the back. The one thing I'm not crazy about is the illustrations. They depict each instrument as having a head and arms so they can play themselves...which doesn't make a lot of sense.I would recommend this book mostly for 2nd or 3rd graders, maybe 1st and 4th graders.

This is a great book to use in the music classroom. My students love learning about instruments that make beautiful music!
