This may seem petty, but I reduced the rating because of the photo content. It says "Kids Can Sew", but it seems more like "Caucasian Girls Can Sew". The front cover shows a young child of color modelling a project that can be made by the kids, yet in the book itself, it seems to be all Caucasian girls in the tutorials. The cover child is never shown anywhere else, nor any other ethnicity. Again , this may seem petty to some, but for a family that has children of color it is very encouraging to see "someone like you" doing something creative. It was a very noticeable omission that the child modelling the jacket is not the girl making the jacket. And also there were no boys featured in the book at all. There are projects that are not gender related, like decorated T-shirts, pillows and puppets that a boy could learn to make while acquiring sewing skills and that a boy child could have been included to show that ALL Kids can sew. who's to say that a brother wouldn't want to sew a doll or a skirt for his sister. You don't have to be a girl to make things for girls. On the other hand there is a variety of girl children from blonds to redheads with freckles. I just wish they had extended that variety a bit more. I mention it because I'm bought the book for myself, but plan to give it to my niece when she's old enough, and being aware of stereotypes and image is important when children are trying to find their identities and I don't want her to say, "there are no kids like me doing that". the thought occurred to me that maybe they only had these kids available to make the items, but if they got a model for the cover they could have gotten models for the other projects as well. For Material Content, this book is fabulous.
