Florence Temko's "Squawker Toy" (p. 5) is, by itself, worth the price of Origami for Beginners: The Creative World of Paper Folding . I was lucky enough to learn this wonderful simple action model from Florence herself at the big publishers' convention when the book first came out--the only time we met. Since then, I've taught it in many origami workshops, and it's always a big hit. Whenever I see unhappy little kids--in airports, subways, concerts--I grab some paper and fold this. It distracts them every time! It's a very forgiving model. The folds don't have to be precise. Just this morning, I taught it to a neighbor, who has bad arthritis in her hands and hasn't done any origami since grade-school fortune-tellers. She can't wait to show her toddler grandson what she made for him!Sadly, Florence Temko died November 12, 2009, but as long as people do origami, she'll be remembered in a way that would surely have made her very happy. This book is 32 pages of very simple paper folding. It should get 5 stars for a child user and 2 stars for adults. It appears to be best suited for use as an arts and crafts book for children with adult supervision. I intend on using in arts and crafts activities with nursing home residents. If you are interested in paper folding for your own pleasure get something more challenging.
I love this book and have used it for years. I've used it with my grandchildren and with my adult students as part of a craft workshop. Everybody loves it. The directions are easy, the projects fun. I'd recommend one for every kid in the family from two to 92. (Hill is author of the mystery novel The Dead Angel.)
GOOD FOR AGES 9 AND UP ALSO IF YOU WANT QUICK AND EASY FOLD
I was hoping there would be a little more challenging ones in here. I think this book would be best for a 3 or 4 year-old.
Very good book for my 8 year old daughter. She has enjoyed making everything out of it and has done quite well with it.
Well written and clear instructions. Easy to understand for all ages. Great time filler that doesn't involve a screen!
