This is a great introduction to paper airplanes for the novice. The models range in complexity from easy to difficult, providing a challenge for both kids and adults. Best of all is a brief comparison of each model with specific models of actual airplanes, and a brief primer on flight principles. Taken together, this book is a great lesson in aviation, as well as a lot of fun.
A clever Father's Day gift. I've made four airplanes, so far, and they all fly as promised. I'm looking for some wide open spaces with a launching hill and a slight breeze, then I can enjoy their true potential. The instructions are very easy to follow: grab--but don't wrinkle--a sheet of bond copy/typing paper, make mountain folds and valley folds, you'll see, have a ruler and pencil handy, and a sissors. A glue stick is called for from time to time--I didn't have one, so I used a small piece of scotch tape. Oh, yes, you can color them in a variety of patterns. Fun and educational (basic flight principles) and a great value at $7.95. And no, I am not related to the author nor a friend of the family.
Bought this for part of my 7th grade class on flight and space, woah these are difficult. So far no 7th grader has made a successfully flying plane from this book. Granted they are also impatient and sloppy 7th graders. But these planes are complex and intricate, so only buy if you are going to sit and help your kid, or if you are a paper plane enthusiast who has the patience to make these. They seem awesome, but my kids are struggling with them. Not a problem for me because they spend so much time on them!
My son used this book for months! We made dozens of airplanes and he learned how to use a ruler by using this book. I think it is fun and a great teaching tool into applied measurements. My 7 year old used this book all last summer. We still do use it sometimes. It also taught him how to use a ruler and about fractions. He probably made about 40 airplanes (no kidding).
I really enjoyed this book and had a great time with the designs. The only problem I had with this book is the cover. The three paper airplanes on the cover are nowhere to be seen within the book. I hoped to see these models again from his other book but I enjoyed the new designs, nonetheless. I feel the designs in this book are a great foundation to work with when I decide to modify the designs to make them look more like modern jet fighters.
I have found Norman Schmidt's planes to be among some of the best flying paper planes I have seen and found that once you figure out his style of building, all the planes are based on the same system so it is fairly easy to move through the construction steps. I think the planes are cleverly and well designed and, for me, the book has clear instructions. I have held workshops in schools and the local library and found that many kids, with help, can build these planes. My only bone of contention is the cover. If you already own several of his books, you would think that this book is just a republished version of an older one, with the same planes. But that is not the case! My son borrowed this book from the library and lo and behold there are new planes in it, great ones. So I am hoping to get a copy for Christmas!
My 8 year old loves loves loves it. Even the 4 year old has been sifted around the pages and picked up making couple of planes.i never grew with such books available to me, and we made only a handful of basic paper planes. But this book is a great resource for creative minds and each plane is well explained and well written with great illustrations.
