"Blast Off!" is a youngling's encyclopedia of Star Wars characters. Each spread introduces a character with one to three descriptive sentences. The beautiful illustrations are typically a blend of studio stills and scenes from the films. The movie shots are drawn from the entire saga, sometimes combining original trilogy and prequel imagery. Most of the characters are the good guys including Han Solo, Princess Leia, Yoda, Padmé Amidala and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Curiously, Anakin is introduced as a separate character from the one included villain, Darth Vader. The final page features a composite of all characters and an invitation for the reader to select a favorite. The self-described level one book actually includes a table of contents and a glossary. Almost as good as a ride on the Millennium Falcon, this thirty-two page book is a fun way for young readers to "Blast Off!" into the Star Wars universe.

This book is a DK Readers book of reading pre-level 1, which is to say children that are just learning to read. The book has short, bite-sized text, and large, colorful pictures. The pictures are of various Star Wars characters, covering Anakin, R2-D2, C-3PO, Padme, Obi-Wan, Yoda, Jar Jar Binks, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca and Darth Vader. Now, my young reader liked this book, though I must admit that she is beyond the "just learning to read" stage. As the book contains words like "droid," "blaster" and "Jedi," I am not certain that it is for very early readers at all. I would suggest it for more like level 1 - beginning to read, earlier readers will probably need to much help. But, that said, if you have a young Star Wars fan, they will no doubt love this book. I give it a somewhat guarded recommendation.

I bought this book because my 5 year old son is into star wards and thought this may catch his attention but this book is not for a pre-reader or even a level 1 reader. there are too many complex names and words that are too advanced for what should be in this book. Go with another book.

(Quoting the little guy) I thought it was great because it tells you about things in the movies that you might not know. It was very interesting because it it didn't just talk about the people, but the star ships and tools and stuff. He really liked this book, and then after would talk about it, asking me questions like "Did you know...?" It was pretty cool to see him excited about reading, and it was obvious he was retaining the information about what he read, which is a good thing.

These books are great for new readers who love Star Wars! My son is a huge Star Wars fan and these really encourage him to do some reading on his own! The levels are slightly higher than I expected. As a teacher, I know my son is a DRA 6, however, he really does best (on his own) with the Pre-Level 1 books in this series. It may just be the nature of some of the Star Wars words that are more difficult to sound out.

This year, for Christmas, I purchased gifts for my grand children that did not require any screen, to include TV's, computers, tablets, etc. I purchased gifts that were some sort of activity. The kids loved them. Great book for little boys that are beginning readers. My grand son loved it.

We keep over 100 books on our grandsons shelves at any one time. He enjoys reading about 3-5 books per night and we have done this since he was very young. You never know which book they will enjoy most and when he grows out of them we pass them to family and friends.

I am a girl. But, I have always been a huge Star Wars Fan. I have watched almost all the movies. When I noticed this book on my kindle store, I took a look. A week later my brother bought the book. So I looked at it. Totally loved it. I recommend this book for anybody!
