I love this book. My daughter is the sweetest girl, but she can have a very aggressive, demanding nature and has been having breakdowns when she doesn't get her way. We read this book often and I made up a little song that goes along with the ideas in the book and we sing it whenever she gets upset. Most of the time, she starts singing it with me and it calms her. Today her behavior was frustrating me and she could see it and she told me to take a few breaths, like they describe in the book. It neutralized the situation and gave me a chance to talk to her abut what she was doing. So not only she is accepting of the ideas, she is employing the tools with others. I highly recommend it.
There was a children's book I read not too long ago, about children and sadness. It listed things that could make you sad and things you could do to feel better. But, to be honest, it was boring, for me and for my preschooler. You can't learn anything from a book that doesn't hold your attention or talks down to you. "Little Monkey Calms Down" is nothing like that. Instead of telling children what they should do when they get upset, the focus is on the poor little monkey who dropped his ice cream cone. He cries, he kicks, he screams, he "feels sad and mad and angry." With the repetitive words of "Calm down, Little Monkey," followed by advice for helping Little Monkey feel better (cuddle your blankie, take a deep breath), kids will be rooting for this little monkey to get over his upset (and it's a great chance to add some questions like "What should Little Monkey do next? What else might make him feel better?") The spare, simple words, complemented by fun and amusing illustrations, will easily keep the attention of many toddlers. Toddlers and preschoolers are going to learn what to do when they feel "sad, mad, and angry" but not because of a list of suggestions. Because they will remember what Little Monkey did and hopefully use that in their daily lives. A reminder of "What would Little Monkey do if he was feeling upset?" might help remind little ones when their feelings get overwhelming. In the guise of helping "Little Monkey" calm down, kids learn how to make themselves feel better when they're upset, in a kid-friendly way.
My daughter has SPD and a "high-spirited" nature. She gets so worked up when she has to do something she doesn't want, like go to bed or share a toy, that she makes herself sick. She loved the colors and pictures in the book, and understood the story immediately. When she gets upset now I say "calm down, little monkey. Take a deep breath," and she actually does it. It's amazing. I highly recommend this book for anyone with kids who have trouble self soothing.
This book is so cute!! my little boy has thrown tantrums so we bought this book for him. This book teaches your child in a fun way how to calm down when upset. My son loves this book and sits through all of it while we read to him. Now when he throws a tantrum all we have to say is "Calm down little monkey" and he uses the steps from the book to calm down. What a clever and fun book!!
I purchased this book for my 3yo and we received it yesterday, he read it with me and that was that. Today however he woke up in a horrible mood and was having a complete melt down, so after several minutes I sat down on his floor and began reading it to him. At first he didn't care so I began interacting more with what was happening in the book, the little monkey had a blanket and was using it to calm down, my son followed suit and grabbed his blanket and sat down with me, a complete turn around from a moment ago. We finished the book and his tantrum was over.Needless to say, I LOVE THIS BOOK.It's simple, has nice colorful pictures and probably 10 words a page.
I downloaded this when my niece - that I am babysitting this weekend - decided to have a temper tantrum - and I gave her the iPad and now she is laughing along with the monkey! All calm now. Love it!
My twins are 2 years old; so tantrums are a frequent issue. They love this book so much! It's the first book they've learned by heart. And repeating the words from the book during meltdowns has even stopped a couple of their tantrums so I love this book!
This book is very sweet. My 18 month old really enjoys the monkey and seems to understand the story well. This is a very good book for introducing toddlers to different methods to calm themselves. The story is very simple and the illustrations are great.
