Ms. Montgomerie is correct when she states in her introduction that it is hard to find patterns for children's knit garments above infant sizes so I was excited to order this book, checking my mailbox with anticipation of its arrival and putting everything else down when it arrived. What a disappointment! In a book of 128 pages only 52 pages (11 patterns) are devoted to childrens' sweaters. Even though the author states that both sizes and measurements are given for each, that is incorrect -- there are no sizes anywhere, only measurements, generally 4-5 sets of measurements for each pattern. Furthermore the yarn requirements are brand specific but give little guidance for appropriate substitutions. For example she uses Sublime Soya Cotton, Mission Falls wool, Sirdar Snuggly Baby Bamboo but doesn't offer the common weight numbers provided in the Yarn Standards Weight Chart. Getting to a reasonable substitution will require the extrapolation skills of an experienced knitter. And while she doesn't give this basic information, she does devote fully one third of the book presenting rudimentary instruction on how to knit! This instruction can be found in much more helpful detail in any one of scores of 'how to knit' books leaving more of the precious real estate here for those so hard to find childrens' knit garments. That space could so easily have been devoted at least to a discussion of the yarns actually used in her patterns instead of the sketchy yarn discussion given. The last section, 22 pages, is devoted to accessories including a couple of very simple scarves, and some mittens, socks, hats, an animal and a bag. Another disappointment - do we really need another book of hat and scarf patterns when the sweater patterns for children are so hard to find?
