I am a teacher and I adore this story. At my school we do a Patricia Polacco author study and I always try to include this title. Students LOVE to see what happens as boy and girl are "dared" to switch roles. It is very appropriate for my third graders who cannot stop laughing, especially when Richie has to dress up and perform ballet. Besides being a fun read, I also use it as a way to teach comparing and contrasting. We also discuss the themes of family, and respecting differences. Other Patricia Polacco stories I would recommend include: My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother, Thank you Mr. Falker, and The Keeping Quilt.
Patricia Polacco's style and warmth comes through again! Her words bring you into the story with ease and you find yourself watching a family situation unfold. Hanging onto every word so you will not miss any of the action, you become part of the story. This story involves her brother, Rotten Richie and a very valuable lesson taught by their mother for both of them when they were younger. It's a normal part of childhood that all siblings encounter but the human element evolves sharing with the reader that no matter what, respect comes through when you are in someone else's shoes. As always, photos from her childhood gives the personal touch readers crave for.
I am a fan. That being said, Rotten Richie and the Ultimate Dare is an excellent in dealing with sibling rivalry or any type of rivalry for that matter. I bought this book for my school library when I was working and used it with groups of students. Also it became a favorite and children started looking for the Patricia Polacco books. They enjoyed them all. I love the illustrations as well as the concept. Great book that I highly recommend.
Another wonderful book by Polacco! A must for classroom libraries and your own at home! I will absolutely use this book as a read aloud with my Patricia Polacco author study as well as a part of our Social Studies unit on family relationships!
Rotten Richie and the ultimate dare by Patricia PolaccoThis children's book is about a brother and sister. Each has their own hobby/sport and think it's better than their sibling. She tells us of his bad habits and smells and he does the same about her. The big dare is one neither of them want to miss.He has to go to her ballet recital and she has to go to his final hockey game. Like what they each discover.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
Teaches that everyone has their own strength and weakness. Great for personal narrative teaching. I love that it's a sequel.
My brother and I were rivals in a way - not the same as were Trish and Richie, but we were nonetheless. I was so taken back to my childhood! The pictures of Trish and Richie on the endpages are priceless. Polacco continues her tradition of writing and illustrating books (good ones, too, not drivel) based on her family life. I found myself nodding my head in agreement about the daring, the jealousy, and situations she found herself in because of their rivalry. I think I'll get this book for my brother for his birthday this year! (We are full grown with children of our own.) If you are a fan of Polacco's stories or art, you will not be disappointed.
My students loved listening to this story about a rival between brother and sister. It really helped get their ideas flowing for personal narratives.
