Eight ballerinas who do everything together learn to make adjustments to their dancing days with the arrival of a new dancer. As the new ballerina turns the girls into a class of nine, they have to learn to dance in rows of three instead of four and make other changes in their day-to-day living. This book is a cute rhyming book that teaches the advantages of including others and is illustrated with fun drawing of little dancers. My seven year old dancing daughter loved it.
Watch out, Angelina! Watch out, Madeleine! This sweet story with its breezy rhymes, exotic locale, and delicious illustrations is the piece de resistance for little girls who love to get all dolled up in pink for classe. Delightful.
The illustrations are what drew me to this book - they are really adorable. While I like the story, it seemed like it could have been further developed (the summaries given by others sum it all up; I felt like I had already read the whole book by the time I opened it). I can see why children like the repetitions of the girls' rhyming names. It did remind me of Madeline, which really can't be surpassed!
I bought one of these for a Christmas gift for a granddaughter who loves all things "girl-y". When it arrived, the cover was smudged so I used the account options to see about a replacement. The replacement was easily and quickly taken care of, actually the next day--very nice. I liked the book so much I immediately ordered another for my other granddaughter. The artwork is lovely throughout, very charming. I know the girls will like the repetition of the names, very musical. I know I'll enjoy reading it to them. I can see it as a springboard to their role-playing. This would make a nice gift for girls toddler and far beyond.
This is a sweet book that my daughter received as a gift. I'm sure all parents have those books that they hope their kid will not pick for bedtime because it is just not that good. This is the opposite, and I campaign for it a little here and there. The cadence is fun to read, the story is cute, the illustrations are really nice and interesting and we both thoroughly enjoy it.I bought it for my best friend's daughter and considered it a gift to both of them.
One of our favorite books! We first heard it read by an actual ballerina at our library story time. My daughter loved the fun alliteration and rhyming. Plus she loves the ballet terms that are interwoven. We purchased it for ourselves and have now purchased it for her ballerina friends as a gift to give them at their recital! If you have a little ballerina, buy this book!
My 2.5 year old daughter LOVES this book. I first checked it out from the library because she is a ballet fanatic, and we read it so much I purchased our own copy. The rhythmic cadence and clever rhyming scheme make it a joy to read. As I read it out loud, I stop before the end of each line and let my daughter supply the last word, which she shouts out with glee. Her favorite is to say the rhyming names of all eight girls, ending with an exuberant, "Nina!" The illustrations are enchanting, and my daughter loves pointing out the clothing, hairstyles and other little details. There is also some nice synonym usage in the book, pertaining to such words as fluxommed, perplexed, and befuddled, which has resulted in "mixed up and muddled" becoming one of my daughter's new favorite phrases! The concept of mathematical sets is an added bonus, which no doubt is also seeping into the 2-year-old brain by osmosis. I can see this aspect of the book becoming a jumping off point for learning more about sets as she gets older. Overall, a wonderful book that most any little girl would love, ballet fanatic or otherwise, that is especially suited for reading aloud together.
I agree with another review that this book reminds me of the Madeline stories! This one is for my Granddaughter for Christmastime, and as she is interested in ballerinas I thought this would be perfect! She is 5 and is wanting to make her own friends, and that is what the basis of this story is, having someone new join you! The pink and delicate illustrations are just right for your own little ballerina, and not too wordy or complicated for a little one, with a singsongy kind of rhyming lyric running throughout! I did get the hardcover version hoping she will have it for years to come!
