It's probably safe to assume that on the morning of September 11, 2001, 24 year old Welles Crowther prepared for an average Tuesday, never dreaming that before lunchtime he would perform acts of heroism which would put 24's Jack Bauer to shame. From her vantage point as Welles's sister and mother of a growing family, the author tells her brother's amazing story in a manner that is always positive, never frightening. In roughly the first half of the book the reader learns from a child's standpoint how Welles developed his interest in fire safety and how the famous red bandanna became a permanent part of his wardrobe. From that comes the details of Welles' non-stop efforts to save as many lives as possible in the brief time he was given that day. Personally I was amazed at the author's ability to present a short, action-packed story meant to inspire admiration not fear. John Crowther's bright, colorful illustrations serve as a backdrop to reassure the reader that Welles' s story is true and was given by primary witnesses whose lives Welles saved that day. Once again, the information is provided in a simple, child-friendly manner.Son and brother, fire-fighter, athlete and loyal friend, Welles Crowther was a living American super-hero whose intelligence and dashing bravery make him an exciting role model. Highly recommend this book!

This book is a very accurate, and for youngsters, gentle telling of the story of a 9/11 civilian hero, Welles Crowther, by his sister. All who have read it , including highly respected, veteran elementary school teachers; psychologists and parents, have said that this book is the perfect way to begin to introduce the subject of September 11, 2001 to young children.

Whatever I could write would not do justice to the strength of this work. It allowed me to not only fulfill Mr. Rogers' exhortation that we should always "look for the helpers" in times of fear and chaos, but allowed me to have tangential conversations regarding what it means to be a heroic person and a heroic man. What an amazing eulogy for an exceptional American.

Loved this true tale of heroism on 9/11, told in a way kids can understand. Lovely illustrations!I cried big fat tears of Welles' heroic efforts at the World Trade Center.

Beautiful and touching tribute to a true American hero. Welles' heroism and selflessness are lessons that all children should lean about.

I have given this wonderful book to friends and colleagues who have children who were either not born, or not old enough to remember, the events of 9/11. I did so after checking with social workers who indicate that the book is an appropriate and meaningful way to teach the history to children and to vividly illustrate the concept of heroism.

The Man in the Red Bandanna isn't about 9/11 or about heroism in the face of evil. It's about identity and purpose and how we become who we are. It's a timeless tale that happens to be set in a historic moment. Fagan's story about her brother is told with a simplicity that will resonate with young and old audiences alike, albeit for different reasons. Reading this with young children will prompt important conversations. Reflecting on the book afterward will prompt soul searching. Welles Crowther was a hero long before his actions on 9/11. Fagan's memorial to him challenges each of us to be the same.

The Welles Crowther story made me realize the Trade Center had occupants who were empowered and busy during the crisis. In typical American Spirit, they were not helpless victims.
