Walter Dean Myers has put together a unique collection of poetry highlighting AfricanAmerican childhood. Instead of using traditional illustrations, Myers gathered acollection of turn of the century photographs of African American children in placesranging from flea markets to museums. Each of the poems seems to capture the veryessence of the corresponding photograph and bring life to the nameless faces within the pictures. I enjoyed all of the poems in this collection, my personal favorites were "Love that Boy" and "Pretty Little Black Girl" which were tributes to Black boys and girls respectively.While I enjoyed this collection, I believe this is a book that will be enjoyed more by parents than by their children. Still this book is a wonderful tribute to ordinary African American children and our rich cultural heritage. This is a lovely book of vintage photos of black children. The photos are very beautiful and illicit smiles and emotion. The poems with each photo are sometimes catchy, like a jump rope rhyme and sometimes sweet, like a lullaby. Probably a little more suited for girls, if buying for a child. It is also suitable for adults. I have given it as a gift to two or three adults and they all loved it. I own a hard copy I have it displayed, because I like for as many people as possible to share in the pleasure.
My daughter fell in love with this book in January when she took a how to teach children's literature class. I purchased it for her upcoming 21st birthday. Once I read it, I fell in love with it too.
It's a wonderful make you feel good book. A great gift idea for all ages. The photos are beautiful and heart warming. I have given this book as a gift many times and everyone adores it.
I adore the pictures in this album. I ordered a book for my "treasures" and also ordered one ro give to my very good Black friend. She liked it also.It is hard to pick a favorite picture. But, if I had to, I would select the one of the little boy riding in a cart pulled by large goats. I had pet goats in my lifetime. I enjoyed playing with them and learning their ways. I have always considered them special. And I have a warm spot in my heart for goats.
I just wanted to add another 5-star review. The photographs are wonderful, catching both the fragility and wonder of childhood as well as a another time. The poems do the same thing. . .my favorite poem is Jeannie Had a Giggle, with Prayer a close second. A perfect book!
Just think, if I hadn't wandered by the poetry section and decided to look at the books, I might have never discovered this gem. I only found this because of a student's request for rhyming books and an admiration of Waler Dean Myers. Thanks fate.
