This New York Times Bestselling picture book biography series by Brad Meltzer has an inspiring message: We can all be heroes.Jackie Robinson always loved sports, especially baseball. But he lived at a time before the Civil Rights Movement, when the rules weren't fair to African Americans. Even though Jackie was a great athlete, he wasn't allowed on the best teams just because of the color of his skin. Jackie knew that sports were best when everyone, of every color, played together. He became the first black player in Major League Baseball, and his bravery changed African-American history and led the way to equality in all sports in America. This engaging series is the perfect way to bring American history to life for young children, providing them with the right role models, supplemementing Common Core learning in the classroom, and best of all, inspiring them to strive and dream.

Sports and the people who compete in them so often inspire us to greatness. That is certainly true for the young Jackie Robinson in this animated children’s book.I am Jackie Robinson, written by Brad Meltzer and wonderfully illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos, is a story about achieving greatness through hard work and self-respect. It is an excellent story for young children. The story is animated in a playful manner, similar stylistically to Calvin & Hobbes. This makes it a thoroughly enjoyable read, especially for parents who might want something different than the traditional storytime fare. However, it is the story’s message that I appreciated the most. It includes tales of our young Jackie Robinson dealing with segregation and racism in his childhood and early adulthood. Initially, like most youth, he responds by matching hostility with hostility of his own, responding to insults and rocks hurled by his tormentors, with some insults and rocks of his own. However, Jackie is fortunate to be blessed with a mother and with mentors who teach him the importance of rising above simple retribution. By the power of his example, he inspires others with his greatness in baseball. In time, those who once scorned his entry to professional sports were chearing his name.Bottom line: I recommend this for young readers everywhere. Additionally, I feel that this story would be an excellent selection for young children in group story time or the younger grades of school. Its message of always believing in oneself, and not responding to hate with more anger are very important lessons for youth.

A great book that will introduce your child to racial inequalities in a soft way to open up the lines of communication. Kids notice differences, and often times adults shush them because it's hard to talk about. This book will open up those lines with focus on treating everyone equally and not judging people. I now have all of Brad Meltzer's books!

I buy books for my nephew, who turned 1 on Christmas Day. This is definitely for an older reader to read independently, however my brother and sister-in-law read to him every day. I buy all ranges of books to add variety for them (the adults). This is a beautiful book and a wonderful series overall. They are wonderfully written and illustrated. I learned something new when I read them before wrapping them as a gift. I love that they are multi-gendered and multi-racial. Even more, I just love the tagline: Ordinary People Change the World. I was unaware of this series until I heard the author talking about it on a podcast. I am so glad I found out about them. I will definitely be adding the entire series to my nephew's library.

The 2nd graders are learning about Jackie Robinson at school and I thought this would be a great way to rein-force what they have already learned about him in a more comical way. Of course, they LOVE it! Like Meltzer's other books in the series, he has placed fun in history where children puts laughters in the equations of learning history. What a wonderful as always, and bravo for Meltzer. I will continue to purchase more of this series as I have already have a library of them and can't wait until the new ones comes out.

Leave it to tell bestselling author Brad Meltzer to tell a powerful story that has so many lessons for us today.I AM JACKIE ROBINSON is one of those books that takes you not just into an individual who made a difference, but reminds us all how we can bring the best of ourselves to any situation and change the world in the process. There was so much about Jackie Robinson that I didn't know, but after reading Brad's book I was intrigued to discover even more. I love the fact that the book chronicles not just the change that has come in this country when it deals with seeing people for who they are instead of their color but how just by your example you can lead people to a better place. The book ends with a powerful quote from Robinson: "A life is not important except for the impact it has on other lives." What a great mantra for us regardless of our interest or how we see ourselves. We can make a difference, but we have to be willing to do the work, not give up and stay faithful to the course in front of us.Definitely a story that young and old will enjoy and learn from, Meltzer's book reminding us of the lessons of Jackie Robinson is just what we need right now.

This is a very good book for my baseball-obsessed 5 year old. Some of the storyline probably goes a bit over his head, but he is engaged and excited, and asks to read it again and again. It has also been a good entry point for our white family to talk about racism and discrimination in the US.

This is the 4th Brad Meltzer "Ordinary People" book I have purchased for my grandchildren. It seems that adults enjoy these books as much as children do. Each one highlights the "ordinary" person's history and makes it come to life. I learned something from each book even though I thought I knew that person's story. I think I have read each book at least 6 times to my grandchildren. Wonderful writing, wonderful true stories.
