I bought this book for my 5-year old grandson, but I was so taken by its carefully chosen collection of old photos and quirky, charming verse that I am now giving it as gifts to children of all ages as well as friends and relatives. It is a wonderful way to introduce a child to the world of black and white photography and to start a discussion of personal family history. âAre these children our great-great grandparents?â asks Radunsky in his essay at the end of the book. And really how many children today know anything at all about their great grandparents, let alone their great-great grandparents? This book is a great tool for a parent or a grandparent to start talking to the children about history in general, using images in these old photographs as a departure point. And even if the children will not recognize some of the words in the limericks, they will laugh at the peculiar sounding names. And isnât it what good literature is all about: to teach and entertain!
Fun, funny, odd; perfect for my two-year old granddaughter whose sense of humor delights in the off-beat.
