This is a very beautiful book about Mr. Parks. The artwork is lovely and the story is informative and easy to understand. This is a great book for young readers. Mr. Parks had many skills he was a photographer and a director among other things. He directed Shaft and other films. This book will help youth understand who Gordon Parks was in a simple and informative format. Highly recommended.
Beautiful illustrations that do justice to the poetic words in this biography of a legendary artist. I was mostly unfamiliar with Gordon Parks before picking up this book, but am so glad I took the time to learn his story. He achieved enormous success during his lifetime, particularly concerning his prominence as an African-American photographer.
It's a beautifully illustrated beautiful story about great photographer Gordon Parks. It's for a young reader, but it defintely can be enjoyed by grown-ups too
Although I am an older photographer hobbyist, I was inspired by this true story. I think evey African American children (and parents) should read this story.
I really loved the way this story unfolds. Great topic. Great illustrations. My kindle version had an error, but it shouldn't make anyone miss this story.
Gordon Parks was born in Fort Scott, Kansas, the youngest of fifteen children. As a boy, his white teacher told her class of black children they would all grow up to be waiters and porters. When Gordonâs mother died, he moved to Minneapolis to live with his sister, where he actually did work as a waiter and porter. Photos in a magazine gave him the idea to buy a used camera and try his hand at photography. Gordonâs photos were so good he landed a job as a government photographer in Washington, DC. He took his camera with him all over the city. His photos exposed the poverty and racism that black people endured. Gordon went on to work as a photographer for Vogue and Life magazines. Throughout his long life, Gordon Parks achieved fame as a novelist, filmmaker, and composer.Weatherfordâs use of present tense draws readers into the story of Gordon Parksâ vast and remarkable career. Christophâs illustrations mimic the style and humanity of Parksâ photographs. Four samples of Parksâ famous photos are included at the end, along with a more detailed biography. âGordon Parks: How the Photographer Captured Black and White Americaâ introduces readers to a true American Renaissance man.
I can't wait to pass the story on to my grandkids. For the love of art. Thanks you God dee
