I live in St. Louis and purchased this book for my children. After reading it my daughter asked to go and see the artwork and said she'd like to live in a community like Ferguson where people come together. I then purchased copies for friends' children around the country so they could use it as a way to start talking to kids about how we can build more just and peaceful communities wherever we live. Beautiful book!
This is an AMAZING book!!! I bought one copy for each of my elementary classrooms! This book is filled with hope and love and shares how a difficult time can bring people together! The art work is incredible and the message is powerful!
A delightful book that offers a hopeful outlook in the wake of the August 2014 troubles that followed the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. It's wonderful to hear that already, teachers and students have found the book to be a gentle welcome into age-appropriate conversations about what happened during those months through the light verse and colorful pictures painted by community members who joined together to beautify a city scarred by violence.
Living in St Louis at the time of the Ferguson riots, it was difficult to talk to my children about the events - and what precipitated them too. Moreover it was hard to really give them hope in a scary and difficult time. Carol has done a great job of telling the story - the truly inspirational story of people that banded together and gave hope.
To be quite honest when I first received this book I had no idea what it was about other then it was for children and very colorful. We have been TV free going on 11 years now so if it doesn't hit social media or someone tells us about it we generally don't know what is going on. Why? 9/11 did that for us. Children saw too many news broad casts about something that was even hard for adults to take in. I still disagree with the way they show it each year in the schools. At a time when our nation was saddened by 9/11 I was caught up in the death of my Hero my father who died during his sleep of a massive heart attack. He was my rock, my world, things changed after he died and 9/11 didn't faze me at all which is probably one of the reasons I don't like to hear about it.As for Ferguson in 2014 and again in 2015 I did catch up. A sad thing happened. I had done my video review before putting the 2014 and 2015 happenings together. My apologies for that. I was a little off on the timeline as well, but this book is still awesome. It shows how a community can get together and heal over tragedy.I do hope that they have again started painting for healing after the 2015 Riots. It had to be scary for everyone all over again. Peace and love can overcome anything. All we need is to band together to make it happen. This book is super colorful, inspiring, as well as being a lesson to all that young, old, poor, and rich alike can make a difference together. I received this product as part of a promotion in order to facilitate an honest and unbiased review.
As someone who grew up in Ferguson and participated in the painting for peace project, I have many connections to this book. However, the book doesn't just belong to Ferguson. A broader message of resiliency and hope for racial harmony is woven throughout the images, making it relevant for any community. Though the book tells only one part of a much larger and complicated story, it is a great teaching tool to start dialogues with children about what kind of world they want to live in, and empowers them to do their part. I'd recommend this book to any teacher, therapist, or parent who wants to start talking with children about race in America.
I love this book so much. My son uses the pictures in it to calm down when he's upset which is really telling when you consider its origins. The author should be really proud of carrying out such a beautiful idea. The wording follows a perfect rhythm and it's a nice long visual path through the paintings done. I'm adding it to my list of favorite gifts for this holiday season!
"Painting for Peace in Ferguson"is being used in our school to increase understanding. It's a great book that speaks to the call for acceptance, love and peace through art.
