I have always been a voracious reader and lately I have been also reading many graphic novels. One of my favorite founding fathers in American History has been Thomas Jefferson. When I saw there was a graphic novel of Jefferson I immediately purchased it (Thomas Jefferson: A great American by Matt Doeden, Illustrated by Gordon Purcell and Terry Beatty) on .Even though I have read quite a few books in the past on Thomas Jefferson, I did find this 32 page graphic volume interesting and informative. This text is organized into four chapters. Chapter one covers Jefferson’s early years. Chapter two deals with his close relationship with his family and why he is considered the father of our country. As every American knows or should know, Thomas Jefferson wrote our constitution. Chapter three is about the triumph and tragedy in his life. The final chapter tells about his accomplishments as President of the United States. One of the things I like about this small book is that at the end of the book there are resources to further research information about Thomas Jefferson. There is also a glossary, internet sites, read more on Jefferson, a bibliography and an index.Even though these graphic library editions are aimed at very young readers; nevertheless, it packs a lot of basic information about Thomas Jefferson in its 32 pages.Rating: 4 Stars. Great!

I am a teacher and my students absolutely love these books! I would give them 5 stars, but they are cheaply made and pages start falling out after only a small amount of use.

While we have dozens of the graphic histories, and generally love him, this one has one MAJOR problem that taints the entire book. It says nothing of slavery, except for a reference to Jefferson defending a slave in a claim for freedom, citing this as the beginning of Jefferson's efforts to end slavery. It would also be the end of his efforts. Everything he did was on the backs of slaves, and no other founding father did more to preserve slavery. His doctrines not only fought to preserve slavery in his own time, but were the philosophical underpinnings of the Civil War. Truly disappointing that this most serious part of his history and legacy was omitted, in a complete white washing job.

It was interesting on how he wrote the constitution!
