Martin Luther King And The Montgomery Story

Nearly sixty years after its creation, a little-known landmark of comic book history returns! This 16-page comic is a simple but revolutionary account of the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott, in which Rosa Parks, Dr. King, and 50,000 others used the power of nonviolence to battle segregation on city buses - and win. First published in December 1957 by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, it went unnoticed by the mainstream comic book industry, but spread like wildfire among civil rights groups, churches, and schools, helping to mobilize a generation to join the global fight for equality - nonviolently. Personally endorsed by Martin Luther King, Jr. himself, over time this comic book has reached beyond his time and place to inspire activists in Latin America, South Africa, Vietnam, Egypt, and beyond... as well as inspiring MARCH, the new graphic novel trilogy by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, and Nate Powell.

This is the only officially authorized reprint of the landmark 1957/58 comic book that has helped inspire protest movements across the world over the last fifty years. One of the things that most impressed me was the care given to reproducing the comic exactly as it was printed in the 1950's. When you read it, you feel like you're holding a sacred historic artifact. Most importantly, all proceeds go to the Fellowship of Reconciliation, the organization that originally had the courage to produce the comic at a time when comics were not nearly as beloved as they are today.

Incredible depth in a comic book. Covers King's life, Rosa Parks and the Bus Boycott, and the life of Ghandi. This is a great historical document. Saving it for my grandchildren.

Outstanding and great reflection of the true spirit of the Civil Rights Movement in a way that young (and older) people would appreciate.

I previously had no idea how much Dr. King's response to racism and violence stemmed from love. Only recently have I learned that civil rights activists were trained in non-violent response. I lived through the civil rights era and recall how the media was much more focused on the Black Panthers and other groups whose response to racism was sometimes intimidation and violence. There was nothing gimmicky or irreverent about the story of Dr. King and Montgomery being related through the medium of a comic book.

Created by Alfred Hassler and Benton Resnik this short 16 pager comic book was first published in December 1957 by the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Illustrating the Nonviolent Method using the case of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the comic very simple and elegantly tells how nonviolent action works.I read Stanford University's digitized copy.

This is a great resource for anyone who wants to understand more about the struggle for civil rights. A good introduction to the topic for children and young teens.

It was like entering a time machine. Interesting to read about what they were going through back then and what is going on now.

Great for young readers as a point of reference in the country's civil rights struggle.
