If you are looking for the sleeper graphic novel of the year, this is it. You wouldn't expect a historical graphic novel aimed at young readers and published by a regional press like this to be such a great read, but it is actually one of the most satisfying, gripping, dramatically told, and just plain interesting graphic novels I've read in a long time. The book soberly reveals the trials and tribulations of the incredible 2000-mile coast-coast trek by oxen-drawn wagon train that many pioneering Americans underwent some 150 years to gain better lives. What makes the story so gripping is that it's all told through the eyes of a freckle-faced, flaxen-haired young girl who records the events of her family's Oregon Trail trip in her diary. It's a real STORY, with interesting, individual characters who are transformed by their journey. Frank Young (the writer) has created a thrilling dramatic narrative that feels a bit like the great old western films of Anthony Mann, John Ford, and Budd Boetticher. In fact, after reading the book a second time, I couldn't help but think it would make a great movie.Even though the book is aimed at a target market of young readers, Young and Lasky do not sugar-coat the sheer toughness of life on the Trail. People suffer loss, get sick, and even perish on this journey. There also moments of quiet victories, simple joys, and a reminder of the goodness that can be found in community. The book makes us feel what it was like to take such a huge risk. The stakes are high, and this keeps the pages turning as the wagons roll. In one memorable scene, a woman is stunned by the sudden loss of just about everything she has in life, and the rest of the people in her wagon train hold her and share what little they have left.
