Spotlight on the Airborne invasion of Crete (Peter Wildley's story): The German gliders came in first, and the the German Junkers and paratroopers followed. There's a lot of German in this part, with translations. The germans had to battle soldiers PLUS Cretan civilians armed with homemade weapons. There was a lot of hand to hand combat.Spotlight on the second battle of El Alamein through the eyes of Keith Douglas: The tank drawings are great in this section. Keith Douglas is a tank gunner with the Royal Yeomanry Squadrons. The allies pounded German gun positions, and the germans began to retreat. The allies advanced. The Germans were shooting at the tanks with 88 flak type guns -- a fierce weapon that was converted from anti-aircraft to anti-tank. The Germans were commanded by Rommel and they were tough in battle. Douglas's tank was alone in advance of the rest of his squadron and spotted German tanks at two miles. He opened fire and drove off 12 Panzers -- he turned the tide of the battle. This was the first mjor allied victory of WWII -- it was really important.Spotlight on the Battle fo Ortona through the eyes of Sydney Thompson, a Canadian trooper. This chapter shows very dangerous urban combat -- but the allies had to conquer Italy and defeat Mussolini. This book was great at showing tank attacks. Tanks are basically my favorite type of war vehicles. I'm eleven years old and I read a lot about WWII. I would recommend this book for kids or adults.
